Hey guys I'm on my first grow, inoculated 40 hours ago and haven't seen any changes in the jars except things are a bit sticky at the bottom.
After reading things today, I didn't realise I needed to consider fresh air with my jars. I have 2 small holes in lid (from syringe) and have tinfoil on top with rubber band. The jars are in a box in a cupboard.
I used pure rye grain as substrate in 1 quart jars. Do I need to loosen lids? I noticed people were using Tvlyer or something to get a small amount of air exchange..
I just gave the jars a good shake to hopefully move spores around, but maybe it was too late :/
thanks!

How big are the holes??? And you need to remove the foil, use a good filter (tyvek or SFD) on top of the lid, but under the band...

the holes are only the size of standard nail. (slighty bigger than thesyringe).
Ok will remove the foil... the problem is there's only one lid (so without the foil the holes will becompletely exposed is that ok?). Do I actually need a filter? I have some polyfil around could I use that?

you can use micropore tape over them as a filter. It also might take more than a week to see any growth. Patience is a big part of growing.

Thanks for input guys, glad I found out I had to do this before it was too late hehe. I don't have any micropore take, and TBH I CBF going and buying some so I think I'll just make a 3/8" hole or so at the center of the lid and put PC'D polyfil in. I'll make the switch in my best sterile environment and hope for the best..

May I suggest drilling a hole in ANOTHER lid..... boiling that lid, then in your glovebox/still air box/flowhood make the switch.... Do not attempt to make the hole bigger while its still on the jar. It is very likely that you will contam your jar if you do this. There is a possibility that you wont, but better safe than sorry.
Yes you need some type of filter over or in the hole. Polyfill will work fine, under the circumstances though, Id use tyvek. If you dont have any, you can cut filter discs out of the fiber filters that most swimming pools use. Its a bitch to flatten out, but double it up and it works real good! Id say even BETTER than tyvek...
NOTHING is better than synthetic filter discs IMO. You can make some with easy felt, but its not near as ridged as a real SFD.
If your going to get serious.. buy some SFD's. Cheapest Ive found is from Fungi Perfecti (google it) You get 100 discs for 50 bucks... reusable for life....
The disc goes on OVER TOP of the lid.... lid goes on jar, filter goes on lid, band goes over it all to hold it in place.
Depending on the "strain" of mushroom your growing, it could take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks to see any kind of growth. Patience is a virtue
Good Luck.

thanks for your help fellas. Just made the switch this afternoon. Took off the lids, quickly covered the tops of the jars with Gladwrap then fitted in the polyfil and switched them back on, this is all in my tiny tiny tiny sanitised cupboard haha.
Will sit tight and play the waiting game. Have the jars in a hot water cupboard which I've noticed has a bit of temperatue variability between 70F - 80F hopefully will be fine.. :-)

Jahoo! it looks like 2 jars may have started!! Couldn't see anything last night and I was thinking today that maybe things went wrong. There is a sticky little collection of grains at the bottom where the liquid from syringe went, so I figured I mucked it up as didn't spread it around well. It looks like only one spore has germinated in each of the 2 jars from that sticky area and the white area is about the size of half a nickle haha. So hopefully things keep going the way they are This all happened 1 day after the polyfil was added ETC. so happy !

Also ! I need to finalise my FC, I have:
_____________________ \ |Z| |Y| /A \ |_| |_| / \____________B__/
Box A, is my box with water in it, B marks the aquarium heater. Z and Y represent lidless plastic containers with bulk substrate in it. The water will have to go to a certain height to ensure the vertically mounted heater has water high enough. (Probably 3/5 the height of Box A)
I need to design a FEO solution for this box but unsure where to put the holes as the water will run out? Anyone have any ideas? I can fan it once a day on average. Have spent a lot of time looking at monotub ETC but unsure how to get this working properly as box A itself is inside another Box 20% larger than itself. I realise this is far less that ideal but its the only place I can do it. So for simplicities sake please assume the box outside box A has plently of fresh air

yes, it will spread slow at first.... let it go till its around 20-30% colonized.... then shake the jar. Beet it against a bicycle tire to break it up real good.... that will make it spread more evenly and much faster... but like I said, dont do it untill its at least 20-30% colonized....

does anyone know much about casing? I've researched my layer should be 3-4 inches deep but how deep should be colonised substrate be?
