it matters little.
since the cake has often colonized the verm. layer (partially) by birthday, often it's best to apply fresh casing to the other end and put that end down. that way the bottom can colonize while the top flushes.
or you can lay the cake on it's side and flush from both ends at once.
to best do that, put 2 tablespoons of verm. in the bottom before filling jar with substrate. the cake will be double-end cased at birth and will pin near both verm. layers at once. a foil cradle to hold the cake on it's side will yield a large 1st flush quicker than normal.
