The whole syringe got sucked into one jar...

Following the PF tek, something went wrong on the fourth jar. Once the needle was stuck in the inoculation hole, the entire contents of the syringe were sucked into the jar without me applying any pressure at all. It happened very quickly.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Obviously there was some suction in the jar - what can I do to avoid this in the future? Puncture a hole with a sterile needle or something first? I was using masking tape.

Drill your holes a little wider. I've never had that happen, but I'm assuming the tape was really doing it's job and created an airtight seal and a vacuum formed when the jar cooled after cooking, you put the needle into the just-big-enough hole and the vacuum of the jar sucked out the contents of your syringe.
Did you inject through the tape?

It sounds like there was a vacuum in the jar, were the inoculation points covered in silicone or something?

Also, you're you should leave the lids a bit loose during cooking so that a vacuum doesn't form in the first place.

With PFTek you should have a dry layer of verm on the top. With the dry verm you don't need the tape. PFTek jars should not be airtight. Make sure you have 4 inoculation holes in the lid.

Really? I was going by the video, which used a layer of dry verm AND tape. The holes were in fact a little small - or rather the syringe needle is really damn thick, so that could definitely have been the problem.
So I've got all these extra jars - I should get a new syringe, widen the holes, unscrew the lids a tiny bit so that they're not airtight, sterilize them again, and try again?

in the videos they use micro-spore tape (medical tape) using other types of tape can cause a vacume because as it cooks the pressure in the jar builds and is released through your inoc points
when the jar cools it wants to suck the air back in to equalize the pressure, when it does this it will pull the tape up against the inoc hold and the adhesive from being cooked will cool and harden making a seal
that least this is what i think happened

I just use foil. The foil doesn't make it airtight, it just helps to keep water out of the jars while steam sterilizing. You remove the foil to inoculate the jars, and at that point you can leave the foil off. The dry layer of vermiculite creates the contaminate barrier from that point on.

The opposite happened to me. I got some vermiculite stuck in the needle and when I pushed it out I accidentally squirted 4cc into one hole.

If you get the needles with the beveled tip, and then point the needle toward the glass, it should help to prevent that problem.

you can always just heat the needle up so the verm shoots out the end, but beveled needles would be awesome im going to have to look into that
