Entrainment and Binaural Beats
    #15157357 - 09/30/11 10:29 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Since my daughter was born just over a year ago I've been plagued with 24/7 earworms.  I started at a new college and the commute is an hour one-way.  It doesn't matter what time of day it is, I'm listening to music if I'm driving.  Everyone seems to experience an earworm at some point or another, a small portion of the lyrics to a song may be repeated over and over, perhaps it's a constant loop of just instrumentals, and earworms can have music as well as lyrics.  By December of last year it was really starting to worry me because I could wake up, and in the seconds it takes to transition from a deep sleep to wakefulness, the lyrics were just in my head as if a record kept skipping on the same track.

When occurrences like these happen they have a tendency to reinforce themselves, it's kind of like having a panic attack for the first time because you don't really know how your body could react so profoundly to what's going on in your sub/conscious(YMMV).  Once you have that panic attack, and for those of you that have experienced one you'll understand this, you're likely to have more and possibly even have them from less profound stimuli.  Mentally and physically the panic can cause unforgettable negative emotions that are powerful enough to create a circuit(shitty analogy) that will be more easily activated in the future.  Another example that's relevant to this site is tripping on mushrooms... if you have a horrifying first trip it's probably going to be difficult to have a good trip the second time if you even bother.

Along with the earworm I've had hypnagogia(probably from caring for my daughter for 12 months and not sleeping).  Hypnagogic jerks occur on a daily basis for me and they happen most often if I fall asleep sitting up or supine.  It only takes a matter of seconds for me to enter a dream-like sleep when I close my eyes, so I experience a dream that has movement while my brain hasn't had a chance to induce sleep paralysis resulting in movement or jumping after a falling sensation.  Hypnagogic speech is more rare but it's really weird to experience it.  This can vary a lot but I hear the voices of people I know talking in my head without any conscious control from me.  It's as if I'm listening to them but I'm just trying to fall asleep.  A specific voice will say a random number of words, usually brief, and then the next voice picks up immediately where the previous one left off.  The words form sentences that if typed would satisfy most grammatical requirements but they don't make sense because the words are random and don't focus on one subject/yet can convey internal emotion.  Example: "You sat down on the fence when you smile don't bring dirt inside of the car hurry you won't make it."  Each color represents a different voice, and they all occur seamlessly as if it were one.  This example is probably shitty because it's so difficult to remember them.

My doctor said it was probably from lack of sleep and stress so he gave me benzos that I rarely take(don't promote quality sleep).  It's so bad anymore that I have to be really occupied mentally to not have the music going in my head.  The worst part about it is that during normal daily tasks that require little attention, the earworm just keeps repeating in my head and I don't remember details from the day that I used to.

TLDR: It sucks having constant earworms.  By chance alone I came across entrainment/binaural beats and figured I'd give it a shot since it cost me $0.99.  The past two nights I used it, but like a dumbfuck I forgot mono audio was enabled on my phone the first night which defeats the purpose since each tone goes in only one ear.  Last night I played only the binaural beat while wearing my Scosche noise-canceling earbuds and I couldn't fucking believe I slept the entire night.  I know, I know.. there could be any number of reasons I didn't wake but I can say our window AC blocks out house noise completely so that isn't so much a variable.  There are a lot of positive effects so far but it's way too early for me to comment on any of them except one.  This morning when I woke up I felt ridiculously better than any other day in recent memory.  It was so shocking because after developing insomnia in my early 20's I lost that refreshed feeling sleep used to give me.  There was a point in my life when I would sleep, wake, and want to get up and go.  That was a long, long time ago.  Today was the first time I've felt refreshed, and that may seem stupid but if you haven't felt that way in so long you forgot what it was like... well it's just fucking AMAZING!

What has had me happy all morning was that I was 100% sure this stuff was complete bullshit and tomorrow I may feel like shit again.  It inspired me enough to research a lot of it and while entrainment remains equivocal, there are some interesting physiological phenomena that arise during entrainment.  I'll keep this updated!  I have an insomnia journal that I'll keep recording in.

I get those too. It's one of the reasons I generally only listen to the residents. Their music is disordered just enough that it doesn't get stuck in my head.
