question about my jar
    #1514827 - 05/02/03 02:43 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

i have a cake, when the mycelium started colonizing it was fine...
now i'm not so sure if it's mycelium or not. It hasn't grown any in 2-3 days
it's not nearly as "fluffy" as two of my other jars. There's very slight discoloration but it's so slight i can't tell if it's more blue then green or vice versa. It seems like the myc might just need hydration. or is it nasty cobweb? it doesn't seem whispy like cobwebs it seems more like hardend myc. I also noticed that on the micropore tape that's covering the holes right where the hole is the tape is orangeish.

i'll try to get pics

also all the sides of the jar are colonized but not the bottom.

i posted in the contam forum already but got no answer yet..
so please don't get in a tizzy

Seperate the jar from the rest and let it grow out for a couple more days to a week and see what happens

if the orange is only rust then that shouldnt be a big deal. but the only thing you can do is wait for growth to see what happens. and if it is just stalled than you can flip the jar to speed things up. also lowering the water content in your mix just slightly will help out colonization times, if you get stalled jars once in awhile.

well i've been flipping the jars so i don't think that's why it stalled.

Well, I'm by no means an authority on mold, just a victim. However, when the cobweb death struck my herd, (on my first attempt no less) it started as what I thought was mycellium. On the walls of a jar it's consistency is decietful.

The coloring doesn't really green for a while either. You could just stick it out and see what happens, or you could open the jar (in a glove-box or with the oven tek) and look at the surface of the verm layer. If the jar was properly sterilized, that's where it got in, and it should be obvious there.

Hope that helps.

why are you flipping if it hasnt stalled?? there is no need to allow potentially dirty air to enter into your jar when extra air is needed! only flip once they have stalled (normally stalling due to a little too much water will happen with 1/2-1" of uncolonized substrate left on the bottom,. at least, that's what AFOAF tells me.
