Should Childless People Pay Taxes To Public Education?
    #15143405 - 09/27/11 06:31 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

If someone does not have any children should they be taxed in order to pay for the education of other peoples children?

Do you want the next generation who will take care of us when we are old to know what the fuck they are doing? Especially if you don't have kids, you may rely on others more..... You want them to be educated. We need doctors too, even if we don't have kids.

I am not saying people shouldn't be educated. I am asking if childless people should pay for other peoples kids to be educated. Childless people are a minority in the country.

I say yes, because even if they don't have the children themselves, the social economy cannot support itself on a generation of idiots. The people without children are as much a part of the social network as those with children, and rely on people such as engineers, doctors, even cooks.

The vast majority of adults have children though. If childless people didn't pay towards public education that wouldn't have an effect on the quality of education. The amount of money would be negligible.

I don't think that's true.

It's all personal preference. I would personally prefer a voucher system that can be used in private educational establishments.

Also, remember that there are not separate taxes for each program the government maintains. There are just much more general taxes on income and property which are then divided up among the various programs. Not that they can come anywhere close to covering the cost atm.

I think it's more a matter of someone else who may not have had children did it for us, now we return the favor.

I never asked and so am not responsible for what someone else did.

But I'm retired and don't pay anymore so it's moot in my case.

Why should the government exist at all? Is there some absolute that exists saying government must exist? It is all just personal preferences.

However at this time in our country, I think we are all better off going the conservative fiscal route except those who are old enough that it doesn't matter because they will be dead before any huge financial collapse happens.

Since the 20s, entitlements have been growing and I would argue that they were good for many of the people receiving them. Even though they are fiscally unsound, we were able to easily live on credit for a long time, and I understand why many would vote in the way they did. If the services benefited me at the time I know I would have supported them even if it meant some potential economic woes from people who have yet to exist that I will never know.

I would prefer a system where everyone used their own money to pay for their own child's education.

At the federal level, no.  The federal government has no business spending any taxpayer money on education.  At the state level, it should be up to the individual states to decide how they wish to fund their state educational system.

That statement, as accurate and easy to understand as it is, will be lost on most people.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. Yes, I think it is in a country's best interest for all people to pay for the education of all children.  If public education was removed and everyone had to pay specifically for their own child's education, then children with richer parents would get a better education on average.  This would reinforce the division among the rich and poor classes.

Personally, I hope the rich keep taking away things that give the poor hope that their children might one day have a better life.  It brings us closer and closer to true revolution.

Yeah lets pay for the poor and downtrodden to spawn irresponsibly.  Then there will be more minimum wage slaves to serve the rich.

If they are your kids, why should I care if they get a good education or not?  Since you want to play fair, perhaps we should make it illegal for poor people to have children they can't afford?
