micropore tape...wtf

on the rr video, it tells me to put micropore tape over the holes before sterilizing the jars...we have been putting them on AFTER sterilization. i never asked myself why i put them on but i would inoculate them and then cover them (assuming it was for so that nothing gets in there). lol why do we need micropore tape if shrooms still grow without it? are you supposed to put it on before? and do u just inoculate right through the tape and then do u cover it again after?

I was under the impression that the dry layer of vermiculite serves the same purpose and made the micropore tape obsolete.

Tape should be put on the jars after inoculation. I just put aluminum foil when sterilizing, leave it on when cooling and take it off one at a time when I inoculating the jars. The micro pore tape is then put on right after I inoculate each jar.
Putting the tape before sterilization is a hassle because you gotta take it off and put it back on. I don't think inserting the needle through the tape is very clean.

You dont need that micro pore tape! Dry verm barrier is enough to keep the contams out.
When i started with cakes i bought cheap micro pore tape and put it on before pressure cooking, once done it was obvious the tape had melted making a huge mess, what a pain to scrape that shit off! I havent used it since

Tape helps to prevent water from entering during sterilization. Verm barrier or not it is always good to use it. If your Vermiculite became wet during sterilization, it could lead to a whole mess of contaminates in your Substrate. I always remove my tape just prior to inoculating my jars. But over all I would still recommend it to keep your Verm nice and dry.

Not trying to be a dick, but doesn't foil over the lid serve the same purpose?

Yes it is also for the same reason. The foil helps but it can really only do so much. It pretty hard to get the foil air tight around the lid of the jar. Why take the chance, the tape is cheap and can be bought at any Grocery Store.

RogerRabbit said: The top layer of dry verm is required. That's the filter that stops contaminant spores from reaching the moist rice flour below. The tape is optional. We show the tape over holes in the DVD, to demonstrate going the extra mile. If you're in an area with a very high contaminant spore load, use it. If not, skip it. RR

I also think it would help if placed on afterwords for the people that like to flip their jars upside down or to the sides shifting the dry verm layer.

Yah some do this. I have in a few cases when I just din't think I made my Verm barrier deep enough Plus I can't tell you the Number of times I've dropped/tipped over a jar

I have only used micropore tape and MS so I cant say for certain, but my 10 jars colonized 100% in just under two weeks. 5 more jars of a different variety are going right now on the 8 day mark and range between 30-50 percent colonized.
