I doubt there is such thing as too small. If you can provide proper ventilation, maintain humidity, and control temp you should be good. I found a sterilite file box in the garbage and I am planning on using it for a monotub.

I wish i had a picture but they are only 3.50 at Big lots and I am only spawning 5 half pints to coir so they should be big enough. But I recently read that it might not be tall enough so I should make it into a dubtub? Which sounds about right to me if they are right about not having enough height... Im just not sure how high my sub is going to be in the small 16qt. Im going 1:2 sub to spawn ratio is that correct? So 10 half pints of coir with 5 half pints of spawn? or is it suppose to be the opposite...? Orrr (sorry I know..) just 5 half pints of sub to 5 half pints of spawn... Sorry for all the questions, Ive read so much no real complete answers and I have information overload

BRF cake is only 1/3 grain by volume, so I wouldn't go less than a 1:1 ratio.

so would 2:1 would be okay (2 parts sub 1 part spawn)

2 to 1 is fine. I find the depth of the substrate to be more important. I like my tubs to be at least 4 inches thick. You can go lower but it will dry out faster

When using ratios it is always spawn:substrate. I would not use a 1:2 ratio because that is actually only a 1:6 ratio, and u.less you crumble the cakes extremely fine your inoculation points are limited.

Thanks for the ratio clarification... but i dont understand where you are getting 1:2 being 1:6 that makes no sense 1:2 is 1:2 and 1:6 is 1:6 lol

I only read your first and last post. Cakes i wouldnt even fuck with spawning them personally. I would fruit the cakes in a sgfc and start some grain jars for the future

No clue how 1:2 = 1:6 either.
You will be fine using a 1:4-8 ratio. For BRF cakes I've used one BRF cake per 3 quarts of cow manure/ver/straw/gypsum (for a 1:6 ratio). Works fine. Less than that doesn't seem like it would be worth it imho.

Perfect. I plan on spawning a decent amount of cakes to bulk in a 30 quart mono tub Then going SGFC maybe 5 cakes and make a tray on the other half an see how each turns out

Why wouldn't it be worth it in your opinion? And please show me the results of your one cake spawned to three quarts.

It takes work and time to spawn. Personal preference is all.
I prefer to use gallon bags or quart jars of grain if I plan on spawning.
