Fuzzy Pins / Proper Set-up?
    #15142136 - 09/27/11 04:00 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

I have some pins on a BRF cake that are awful fuzzy, are they kosher?  I'm a newbie obviously.

This is my set-up.  I've read so many different things I don't know what is best.  I followed a tek to drill a lot of small holes with perlite in the bottom.

I made a "humidifier" by following a nice tek using an aquarium pump and distilled water with a dash of peroxide.  I run it for 12 hours or so a day.  It seemed better than misting with tap water.

Thanks guys.

You could run a small fan in the room, not pointing at the tubs, for some additional air exchange.

Thanks, I'll do that, it's pretty stale in the room.  Appreciate the advice!

This is your problem.  You're confusing humidity with misting.  They're two different things for two different purposes.  Humidity is to prevent drying of the fruit bodies as they grow, and misting is to replace moisture that is lost due to evaporation.  If you try to raise humidity to the point of no misting, you ruin your crop as you've found.

Never saturate a terrarium.  You built a shotgun terrarium and then broke it with that air pump/bubbler nonsense.

You don't have enough perlite in there either and those holes are a lot further than 2 inches apart from each other.

Follow the PF tek to the T next time.

You shouldn't have your SGFC sitting on that table, it should be elavated, & get rid of that pump.  Just mist & fan, even if you only do it once a day you will still have great results.  You also need holes in the lid of your SGFC.

Sound advice but I'd cut out the top of the container then tape saran wrap onto it and then poke holes in that with a pencil or something.

Pimping out your SGFC is the shiznit.

How is that doing anything but destroying it?  Drill holes in all six sides, following the shotgun terrarium tek.  Saran wrap is in no way tougher than the hard plastic of the tote.  Light from the sides is also better than light from directly above.

Maybe it's the picture, but the holes are 2 inches apart, I made sure.  The lid also has holes.  Added more perlite too. Thanks for the advice

mullethunter, your problem is a lack of fresh air, plain & simple.  Completely lose the air pump/bubbler clutter, and start removing the lid several times a day to give your tub some real manual fannings.  You already had plenty of perlite, humidity isn't your problem.  Manual fannings will turn everything around.

Shotguns were made so that manual fanning isn't necessary.

One thing I notice is that a lot of the tubs I've seen have a line of holes below the perilite, and a line of holes near the top. That setup might cause more convective air flow than an even placement of holes over the whole side.

Anyway, I've used air-stones submerged in water, and they didn't affect the humidity in the way I had hoped, so while the air-stone probably isn't causing the problem, it doesn't seem to be pushing enough air to keep the fuzzy mycelium away. I think putting a fan in the room would be helpful.

You must manualy fan your SGFC.

hmm, perhaps you are correct. But that seems to defeat the point.

I read some of RR's notes and he said that it is not crucial to fan, but is still recommended. So I guess it would be more important to people that maybe have no/or very little airflow in their growroom.
