Identification for WV mushrooms please 2
    #15138491 - 09/26/11 09:28 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

Growing in field at college I attend, in grassy open area. Figure this one will be fairly easy for you experts

-------------------------------------------------------------

Not too sure about this one, saw a whole whole lot of them clustered under a cut off tree stump that was obviously dieing, in HUGE clusters. Must have been 200+. Honey mushroom is my only guess, but im really not sure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Last one, but most interesting. Takes on the shape of a morell at the head but feels like jelly. Growing from the base of poplar trees where moss and rotten root was in mass. Was pure white before bruising, maybe a false morell?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again, if i didnt put enough info on some dont worry about it, or ask me if your interested, and thanks!!!

1 is a Shaggy mane
2 is a Honey mushroom, Armillaria mellea
3 is probably an aborted entoloma, it's a funny shape though, I think that's what it is.

You sure the first one is Coprinus comatus?

Arn't the caps a bit larger than that?

I was just guessing some kind of Coprinus sp.

Pretty sure, check out the ring on the stem, might not be, but that would be my guess.

I wasn't really doubting you Falcon

Just curious about what pointed you to the exact species. I'm trying to get my ID's down to species this Fall instead of throwing the sp. around.

The Coprinus isn't exactly edible at that point anyways

dont take my word for it cause ive only been studying this stuff for a few days, but the coprinus genus is well known for the black spores and scaly caps

At first I thought the first one was the horsetail mushroom, but i also thought they were bigger. It seems to be in the same family though even if it isn't. I'm glad to know the second is the honey mushroom, ill probably freeze them and hoard them up for the winter  There are soooo many, I'll take a picture where they are growing next time.

The veil was the clincher, they look of the scales on the cap helped also. I think that this mushroom Coprinus comatos has been split into a couple of species now, but even within species the size of the mushroom can vary a lot.
