First time out/Norfolk Virginia/Sept
    #15135813 - 09/26/11 07:59 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I took Paul Stamets advice and just got out there. The spore print on most of these wasnt that great, maybe because I let them sit too long so the spores would spread in the area or maybe because it was just after a rain and they are still too wet so I wont ask anyone for IDs but if you can suggest I look something up that would be cool.

    * Habitat- in the grass of homes and parks, very common

    * Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
white, spore print beautiful bright green

    * Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)

pictured

    * Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
    * Spore print color (very important!) green
    * Color that the mushroom bruises - brownish red/orange
    * Scent of the mushroom- wasnt stinky
    * Anything else you might find important- some times stand alone some times in pattern/path (pictured)

they were really dense and heavy, for somereason I didnt think puff balls would be

this thing was really wierd. I only saw two, one had been crushed but it had like a casing that was cracked like an egg shell with and orngish brownish ball inside.

I think that's a lycoperdon species (another puffball) that has dried out before completely maturing. Or perhaps it's just some weird species I don't recognize.

Nice color on the nails btw. You want to find yourself some wine caps (stropharia rugosoannulata) or one of the wine-red russula species to go with them

Thanks! lol, translates into wolf farts.

I found these but I dont think I have enough info to ask for ids, they didnt give spore prints, the one with the red dot in the middle however i guess the red pigment was spores because it disapated and there were little red dots all over the dish.

2. and 3. pictures are Russula, 5. looks like something simmilar to Marasmius, and last one could be Gymnopus.
First one could be Tubaria, fourth is too young to tell.

Im in va beach, just as new as you. Specifically trying to find psilocybe and paneaolus. I think i found some pan subs late last night but i gotta go back and get a better veiw/sample. Spore print was pitch black and stems were fibrous and hollow though.

Sorry for the rambling, just wanted to shout out to my va friends

We have those "puffballs" growing on a clay tennis court every fall. They actually grow just under the surface and mid-September get big enough to bulge and crack the surface. I dug some up to photograph yesterday (I will post them soon), and they are the same size as yours... but they do get quite a bit larger, grapefruit up to melon size.

I also agree that the term puffball just doesn't seem appropriate for this fungus. It is a solid hunk all the way through, and just barely floats in water.

They have an odor that is very similar to what you get after crushing a stink bug (if those have made it to you already.)

those pics up there were from my urban assult in the morning. we made it out to the woods later yesterday after noon. There was Indian pipe everywhere, it was good to see. anyway. I have tried to make ids on these, which I thought would be easy but if anyone has a suggestion of what I should look up please pass it on and thank you.

that red one with the black stem is of particular int, I thought it would be simple to find and id.

If anyone has a suggestion for a good field guid for this region that would be dope too. Thanks for anytime youre generous enough to offer as I try to become less ignorant on this fantastic subject.

You have...:
- Something collybioid, I think
- A suillus species, maybe s. bovinus
- Something that could be a pluteus, but probably something else...
- A nice and young cluster of ringless honey mushrooms, armillaria tabescens
- One of those small marasmius/parasola-like musrooms; I always forget what they are exactly.
- Something rotten (in this kingdom)
- Decayed honey mushrooms
- Decaying honey mushrooms (a. tabescens again).

Thanks man

Pick up some mushroom books and try to identify whatever you find. You'll see that you'll get the hang of it, but there's only one way to learn it, and that's by doing it! A good way to go at it is to bring a handy guide when hunting, photograph your finds, and post them here along with your IDs. That way you can practice and get feedback to help improve your skills.

the barnes& Noble in VA beach has the audubon field guide, it has lots of good pictures in it. However the community here seems to have better info in my opinion.
