RIVERSIDE: Professor gave jimson a spin
September 25, 2011 - The Press-Enterprise

Jimson Weed, also known as Jamestown Weed and, scientifically, as Datura stramonium, is a foul-smelling plant that is poisonous in every part -- seed, flower, and stem.

It is a tall plant related to the nightshade. It does produce an attractive flower. When ingested in less than fatal amounts, the jimson produces hallucinogenic images. In fact, the LuiseƱo Indians of Southern California have been known to use jimson in initiation ceremonies to mark a youth's passage into manhood.

In the west of this country, jimson is one of those plants sometimes called "loco weed." These plants seem to drive cattle mad and are much hated by cowmen.

Riverside Community College professor Cecil Johnson in the summer of 1957 decided to use himself as a guinea pig: take a small dose of jimson and later write his impressions of the experiment for a learned journal.

Before beginning the experiment, Johnson consulted with retired RCC professor Edmund Jaeger, a noted desert expert. Jaeger approved of the venture but urged Johnson to "be careful."

Johnson put some of the ground jimson in water and drank the brew. He drank no more than a few swallows of what he described as "vile-tasting brew." Soon he found the room spinning and he was unable to focus his eyes on anything. He could not walk or maintain balance while standing.

Johnson's wife became worried when he began to stagger around and sing new songs with imaginary words. He picked bright, imaginary stars from the fabric of a couch. His dilated pupils saw super-bright colors that went through the spectrum of colors. Finally, he blacked out completely.

His wife, rightly concerned, took Johnson to the Riverside County Hospital, then at Magnolia Avenue near Harrison. The doctor on duty administered Pilocarpine, an antidote for atropine poisoning. The patient suffered from both depressed heart rate and respiratory function. He was near death.

Johnson found himself in a barred cell where criminals were normally placed while in the hospital. Fearing that Johnson might harm himself, workers had tied him to the bedposts of the hospital bed. His hallucinations continued.

As the effects of the drug wore off, Johnson felt extreme fatigue, probably due to his violent resisting while tied down in bed. Soon he felt a strange euphoria. He felt "cleansed and pure," as he later reported. He also felt that he lived in 19th-century France, in a Paris inhabited by unearthly, monstrous creatures.

Johnson's intent in this experiment was to advance scientific knowledge. He knew from the start that there might be unpleasant effects following the ingestion of the jimson. It should be emphasized that there was no violation of law involved in this 1957 experiment. The results of this experiment are detailed in the International Journal of Neuropsychiatry of June 1967.

Johnson urges the reading public to avoid contact with such substances as jimson weed.

Thanks go to Johnson, now retired, whose phone number is in the directory for Williamsburg, Va. He has told me that he would love to hear from former colleagues and students.
