Honey Mushrooms and a Request
    #15128176 - 09/24/11 05:42 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

Found some Armillaria Mellea today on my drive home. Also found an unknown mushroom. Salmon pink spore print, growing near stumps. Any ideas?

Thanks guys

Possibly a Rhodocybe species.

Clitopilus and Lepista are also possibilities, I would not guess any further without examining the microscopic characteristics, someone from the collection location might make a better guess with these macroscopic features alone.

Rhodocybe spores are cyanophilous with an undulated surface and are angular in polar view.
Clitopilus spores are ellipsoid in side view with longitudinal ridges, in polar view they are angular and are also evenly cyanophilous.
Lepista spores are punctate or finely warted, these ornamentations are cyanophilous, in polar view they are round.

Cyanophilous=in light microscopy when mounted in cotton blue the spore wall or walls of the hyphae absorb more of the pigment than the contents.

It is Clitopilus prunulus due to the coniferous habitat and decurrent gills.  Should have an unpleasant farinaceous odor.

There you go, thanks Alan:thumbup:

Remember, Rhodocybe and Lepista can both grow in that habitat and have decurrent gills, with my lack of experience with foreign species I wouldn't make a conclusion from the images alone.

Here is one of my observations of a New Zealand Rhodocybe species of which there are nine described, it is the largest species with a pileus of up to 130mm in diameter.
