    #1499726 - 04/28/03 01:08 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hey folks...
I've been wondering... what cactus grow near Malibu or Los Angeles?
Hopefully some San Pedro, Peruvian Torch... or maybe even Peyote ?

Beats the hell outta me, I don't know jack about cactus heh.

Input, anyone?

My input: not anything active unless someone planted it there.

and if you did find peyote in the wild PLEASE dont eat it.  its an endangered species from being over harvested and a declining habitat.  look at lowes and nureries for some san pedro   peace

Yum. Peyote!
No worries. I won't eat the peyote cacti if I was lucky enough to find one.
I may, however, be tempted to take it and grow it out for myself... but that's only if I find an abundance.

I've found an entry in my Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers (1965, Czechslovakia, Novak):

Quote:

Lophophora williamsii is a native of Texas and Mexico. It is more or less globular and usually has eight shallow lobes. The small flowers are white or pink. This is the Mescal Button or Peyote which is highly valued by various Mexican tribes, containing several narctoics which produce a feeling of exhiliration. The tops are dried and the Aztecs called these Teonancatyl. Similiar symptoms are produced by certain mushrooms which mexican natives gather and eat, dried. (149)

yeah, you won't find wild peyote in cali.
it is almost extinct in the wild in areas where it does grow and deserves to be left where it is. any descent sized patch is going to be older than you are.

you wil likely have luck finding Trichocereus species in nurseries. i believe there are several specializing in succulents in the LA area. if you inquire there about them don't make any mention of intent ingest them, or even mention thier psychoactive properties, or they might not sell to you. in some smaller comunities, they might even alert local authorities.

The Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers is a good botanical reference, but thier research into historical/cultural use of plants is laughable.

for a good resource on Psychoactive cacti, try here. they have an index of many species, catagorized by genus. most enteries contain assay info.

good luck.

[edit: edited for clarification]

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I could have sworn teonanacatl was mushrooms, not peyote. Anybody?

Oh, here we go
http://www.samorini.net/doc/alt_aut/sz/schultes_teo.htm
From Sahagun?s reports (as well as from other early reports which are quoted below), it is absolutely clear that the narcotic which the Aztecs called teonanacatl was a mushroom, Teonanacatl has been identified with the dried tops of the peyote-cactus, Lophophora Williamsii (mescal buttom) and this misidentification has been widely accepted in botanical and anthropological literature.
