anyone ever had problems making cd rom d drive files executable in ubuntu?
    #15122869 - 09/23/11 01:51 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

when I try and open a .exe file in ubuntu, I always get a problem where the file needs to be marked as executable to open it. this usually solves the problem. in ubuntu I can't change the permissions for a cd in the d: drive because the operating system can't rewrite the permissions on the cd. Therefore I can't play any disks meant for windows that are executable.

is there an ubuntu program I can download that will mark the cd to be read as executable in the program or something so I can open it in wine?? Thanks

Have you tried WINE? or perhaps copying the contents of the CD to the hard drive and running from there?

yes wine runs the file once it's marked as executable. can't believe I didn't state that. Jesus I must just blurt out everything I type I forgot to include I was trying to open it with wine.

I digress. ok copy the contents to c: then run it from there? I'll give it a shot. Thanks

this fix seems to have worked, except for the fact that I need two disks to install the game, what happens if I put all the files from disk 2 into the same folder as disk 1? if there are files of the same name, they will try and write over each other right? this can only work if files in both folders are named differently. let's hope so as there is no other option. thanks for the fix though I should have thought of that

Judging from the constant issues you're running into all the time with using Ubuntu, you may want to quit this endeavor. You're the kind of person I would recommend a Mac to.

next on my list, when I get the money. I don't really find macs to be much more compatible then linux though. macs are same as linux tons of windows programs that only like to work on windows and not anything else.

I guess mac has more programs made for mac then linux does though. if only just barely. I don't see how quitting now is going to get me anywhere though. as for the virtual problems, well it's a different os running as guest, those vm problems detecting external drives, usb, cd drive, can happen with any operating system as the virtual machine runs it's own os and has it's own filters for detecting internal hardware etc.

back to what I was saying about the cd install, copying the contents of the cd to the hard drive works, for the first install. but then there is no way the pc can detect when I need to put the second install cd in, because I can't put the install files of the second cd in the same folder as the install files for the first cd. when I do this, it tries to write over the file since the install file has the same name. the install files for cd two are in a folder in the folder for the files for the first install cd. so it goes

>install cd folder 1 > install files and install cd folder 2 > install files

if there was a way I could get the install process to read the second cd install folder when the install for the first cd is finished. that'd be nice. I wish it would automatically "look" in that directory for cd two. this does kind of suck

 :feelsbadman:

if I ever get it figured out then it'll be like :feelsgoodman: :awejeez:

and actually I just got that last filter configured in the virtual machine so it can recognize the external drive. you really have to configure the settings before starting the machine. sometimes a few times for each setting availability. but it will see everything, all drives, usb or internal, pst, etc.

when the install program asks for the second disk, does it give an option to navigate to the files needed or does it simply say 'Insert second disk'?

no that's the problem. it doesn't give me that option, only the insert second disk option. it's a real pain :foreheadslap:
I've even tried leaving the first half of the installation alone then resuming the second half of the installation manually. doesn't allow me to. There has GOT to be away around this.

call of duty 1. cd reads the install key and everything. and since I bought the deluxe edition, it comes with united offensive, also two disks, I'd have to repeat the process.
I tried running it in the virtual machine, since it uses up such a low amount of virtual memory. however, the virtual machine has some 'bugging' problem. the mouse won't stop dragging from one side of the screen to another when I launch it in guest os win xp. I came so close to a full install in ubuntu, so frusterating! :kingcrankey:

ok honestly this thing is confusing the crap out of me, it tries to open the program using wine, then I am back to square 1.

do you have a reference link that explains how this thing makes the game run better? thanks

maybe this will solve it for me:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=600432

I'm so desperate I'm willing to try THIS:
http://www.acetoneteam.org/

THIS GUY had the same problem, but seems to think it has something to do with an nvidia driver. he seemed to have some type of fix for it LOL, but I can't understand if what he is saying is he fixed it or if he is saying he came nowhere close?:

"Installing with 2 CDs
by Mike on Sunday December 20th 2009, 11:48
I had some problems installing the "Game of the Year Edition" from 2 CDs. I created a new wineprefix, ran /dvd/Setup.exe from my homedir, but I was unable to "wine eject" when it asked for CD2. Before exiting the installer, I created a "e:" symlink to my /dvd mountpoint in the dosdevices directory, which allowed me to eject the disc, put in CD2 and mount it, but the installer didn't see the second CD. Maybe it had something to do with the installer running from the z: letter that maps back to /, because once I reran the installer with the "e:" symlink to /dvd and the "e::" symlink to /dev/dvd, I was able to swap discs and the installer saw the contents had changed. The installer crashed with an I/O error when I was asked to reinsert CD1. I'm not sure what happens in that stage of the installation, but the game could be usable. I'm getting a buffer overrun error when starting CoDSP.exe, but it sounds like this may have something to do with NVIDIA's 190.42 drivers."
