Colombia Seizes Assets of Mexican Drug Lord’s Partners September 22, 2011 - laht.com
BOGOTA – Colombian authorities embargoed $250 million worth of assets belonging to family allied with Mexico’s most powerful drug lord.
Police and prosecutors seized homes, vehicles, farms, vacant lots and vehicles in the provinces of Cundinamarca, Bolivar, Atlantico and Antioquia, the Attorney General’s Office said.
The properties and assets belonged to relatives of the late Francisco Cifuentes Villa, the pilot and confidant of Medellin cartel chief Pablo Escobar, killed by Colombian police in 1993.
The family now allegedly provides security and financial services for Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, whose name appears on the Forbes magazine billionaires list.
Dolly Cifuentes Villa, Francisco’s sister, was arrested early last month in the northwestern city of Medellin, capital of Antioquia, and is being held on drug and conspiracy charges.
Dolly and other members of the Cifuentes Villa clan are among the listed owners of 49 firms identified by Colombian authorities and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as part of a structure used to export an estimated 30 tons of cocaine to Mexico in the last three years, according to police.
