Trich or bruising?
    #1511787 - 05/01/03 05:28 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Is it a common mistake to confuse trich with bruising? My friend's cakes have just been sitting in his terrarium for eight days and some started to get a bluish green hued blotch, looked like it came from the inside. Is trich a common cake contam.? Is there any reason that a cake might bruise spontaneously?

might bruise if lots of water built up on the cake

There could be a lot of water buildup now that I think about it. The roof of the terrarium has perlite condensation that rains on the cakes, he hasn't had time yet to make a drip shield. Also, the aquarium smells musky, but that's how it's been from the beginning (see air pump post). How does the fruiting chamber normally smell?

Yes, trich is a common contam. though I've never had probs. with it contaminating cakes..just my own experience, I'm sure it does. In regards to your "spontaneous bruising," dehydration has been known to turn mycelium a bliush hue, though your using perlite so I seriously doubt thats the cause. Give it some time, its probably minor bruising, you'll be fine.

the easiest way to tell is wipe it lightly with a paper towel....if it comes off...it's trich...

Blueing is like a bruise, under the skin.

Tric is like a mold, above the skin.

Look & decide. It is not tough to tell the differance.
