TooL & The Spirit of Cannabis
    #1511692 - 05/01/03 04:48 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I posted this at Toolshed.down.net but i thought yall might like to hear it.

I thought I'd post this to let us stoners know we are not all that different from our music making friends. Anyone who blazes one and listens to third eye knows what I mean. But for everyone else here is a caption from the newsletter from when they played Nov. 22and here in Fresno, Ca. Obviously they know our area and shops........

"Oh, the lengths people will go to get backstage. We'd let them explain their situation, and play along until the last minute before telling them that they were full of s***. But we always told them that it was a nice try (those with the better stories, that is). (NOTE: there was one exception: Two kids who claimed that Danny and Justin had come into their head-shop, Kaleidoscope, to purchase a lot of smoking paraphernalia, etc. Knowing this was true[ because I knew that Craig was horrified as the two left together on Danny's motorcycle] we gave them the tickets and passes, but only after making them give us the full list of items bought."

Need I say more. Danny, being the core of the band, has intertwined this "spirit" into the music through hipnotic melodies. The rest of the band builds upon. It seems, when blazed, that someone created this music on common "plain." Thought I was crazy till I read that and then saw the pic on this newsletter.....

I love the plants that were put here and apparently, I am not alone. Can I get an AMEN?!?!?!?!?!?!?

As unrelated as this is, i disagree about this. I think Tool has always founded upon the equal role/importance/musical influence of each band member. Although Danny provides the amazing rhythm, just as such could be said about maynard's vocals, adam's guitar, and justin's bass. This was reassured at the 3 live shows i've seen, where they all have equal quarters of the stage.

sorry for the digression

Thats exactly how the band feels, Blastrid.
If i can find the article where Maynard states it, ill post it.

Ive gone to 3 shows myself.
1 was at Ozzfest (i dunno if this counts, because of the 30 other bands)
1 was at the Fleet Center in Boston (Tomahawk opened)
1 was in Amhearst Mass., (Meshuggah opened) I forget the name of the venue, but it only sat about 20k people.

The Amhearst show was by far the best, not only did it sound great, but i got to see them play 3rd Eye, and they used BOTH openings. (Bill Hicks and Tim Leary) back to back.

oh god, im gettin goosebumps.

I've been to 3 also...

Fresno 96
Fresno 98
Fresno 02

What I meant to say was "foundation" seeing as how he started the band and the drums are the foundation for any band. I get goosebumps hearing bootlegs with crowds. A friend I met on the net is nice enough to send me a full copy of the night I saw them. He records all shows and he noted that Fresno was the best show since Madison Square Garden in '01. He also said "I will listen to this CD for years to come. All I have to do is send 2 blank CDs to his addy. I have nothing for trade so I begged instead and he is super cool and said he would. That is fucking priceless. Not to mention we should be on the DVD. ~fingers crossed~ sorry....got me started...lol

Bootlegs [Re: cerebral gortex]

I have one of the tightest versions of Stinkfist, Aenema, and the patient. If anyone wants them let me know. Via Kazza mabey? The Patient is from Ozzfest, the first time they ever played it. The Anema and Stinkfist are flawless and makes it to where you cant even listen to the regular version any more....

Nice!

I won't die happy unless I hear 3rd eye live.  :smirk:

at the Oakland show on july the 12th (my b-day!)
with a Minidisc recorder sewn into my underwear,
and stereo mics wired in my jacket collar, i made it through the frisk.

i was front and center on the lower balcony (sweet spot)
following a 3 day fast, ate 3 grams as the opening ambience by David Bottrill (TOOL producer/engineer) came in.
directly below me and to my right were 7 Oakland Cops, looking straight at me.

as the trip came on and the experience intensified, even the cops were ecstatic...
i felt like i was on fire and would be vaporized if i did not take off my jacket.
but i wanted a bootleg so bad, i kept dancing in that Toolian way, and PEEKED.
at one point i saw the cops pointing at me and laughing at my dance...

Maynard jammed a six sring bass with justin, and some guy came on stage with a dumbek, who could not keep up with Danny.
anyWay when i came home and cued the disc, my audiotechnica minis were BLOWN. that show had to be >110db..

oh well, that's what i get for trying to preserve the Present Moment.
bootlegging a TOOL show is like taking pictures of Yosemite Valley;
it just does not even begin to compare...

Soundmind, do you trade any .shn sourced shows? I have about 8 and am getting more all the time.

 That is too cool to put that much detication. I couldn't have handled that intense of a trip. I take 2g. on a full stomach and I'm outtaspaceglue. This guy at the fresno show during disposition when the head is floating up and down and the skull pops out of the forhead and then back in...over and over.. well this dude starts ~FliPPIN~. He was a big guy too. It took like 6-7 security guards to get him out. Since they were recoring I wonder if they got that guy on tape, watchin him loose it. That show was so full of vibes. Mabey it was just me. It was seated but you were on the floor and had your own little cubicle to rock out and let out all that tool energy.

i think .shn is one the best audio file compression algorithms out there,
but i have had a hard time finding TOOL in that format.

if you have any linx, that would be sweeet...

hey EB- i was going to take the amtrack to Fresno for that show, but i didn't have anywhere to stay that night..
maybe it was just me, but the Zeitgeist had seriously grown in power since the Aenima tour.
man i wanted to follow them around in a van!

i still question their motives though...

I stumbled onto a Tool bootleg a while ago (the only one I found that was really good quality) and everytime I listen to it, it makes me feel so damn good.
I would trade it, BUT I recorded it onto a tape, so I could reserve what little MB space I have but still have this great show to listen to.
If you could somehow manage to share that bootleg, I'd be grateful
