Totally new to mushrooms

I'm totally new to mushrooms. Not just cultivation, but even consumption. I tried them once about 15 years ago and got only a slight buzz (I have no idea what species they were -- probably Shitaki).
Anyway, I need to be pointed in a good direction. What would be a good shroom for newbies to start with?

Dude, if you got a buzz off shitake, try oysters or woodear. They will blow your mind! HAHA
Seriously though. What are you looking for in a mushroom?

I'm just interested in trying them.
I want to grow my own, so I know what I'm taking. I really have no faith in dealers, of any illegal substance, and I want to be sure I'm not munching toadstools or something.
I suppose I'm looking for a good general purpose, easy to grow, not too mind-blowing, mushroom for a first-timer. I smoke cannabis, primarily as a spiritual experience, and I am interested in mushrooms for the same reason. Elightenment, without the neuro-toxicity, as it were.

I was just being funny, actually. I probably just got inert shrooms of some kind. I took 3-1/2 grams and got only the slightest buzz.

You want to grow Cubensis mushrooms. There easy to grow and will definately make you trip. Usually when you hear of "shrooms" on the streets, This is what their talking about. A trip is not a buzz.. it is a trip and is a very enjoyable experience. Here is a link that will answer any questions that you have.
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3171 It will costg a decent amount of money so hopefully you have a job. If you spend 200$ Your first harvest will be worth about double that (if done right). I suggest using whole grains, and bulk substrates. Read untill you completely understand it. If you just start buying shit and not knowing what its for you will waste time/money.

For a beginner try the PF tek.
I like to fruit in a rubbermade with perlite tho instead of the pf drip shiel spray deal.

Thanks for all the help. I have been reading quite a bit in both the PF Tek and about P. Cubensis. This is a great starting point. I appreciate the input and direction.
