Medieval astronaut
    #1422286 - 04/02/03 02:45 AM (21 years, 1 day ago)

Since the pics are up again and I have my avatar back, I'll start a post about it to follow a suggestion by Learyfan.

So click on my avatar to get a better look and try to figure it out. It's an astronaut carved next to the entrance of the New Cathedral of Salamanca (Spain), which is not that new, since it was finished in 1766. In my history book, the space adventure only started after WWII. So, did the sculptor have visions of the future, did he meet aliens on a space trip, or what?

It looks kinda like one of those old diving outfits too. When did they begin deep sea diving going down a hundread feet in those things?

Diving suits have been around since the early 1700's, so this could very well be a diving suit. I wouldn't doubt it at least. Here's a link to a larger picture:

Really? Never heard about that, but it's possible though. Can you substatiate? I would think that particular kind of diving suit hasn't been around before the late 19th or early 20th century. Could be wrong, but if you have more info, I'd be interested.

[5 minutes later]

Look at this page. It's in French, but it says it was invented in 1860.
Also, look at the spaceman's helmet, it doesn't remotely look like the one that goes with the diving suit.

there are many authentic sculptures much like that from as long ago as 10,000+ years..Off the top of my head I can think of one in Peru and another in caves in china dating in the early stone age..it is wondered if these are supposed to be space suits or under water diving gear, either one is quite impresive..I could get links if you would like.
Many of our fields of study(archaelogy, anthropology) ae quite biased to the set guidlines of "known" theories.. which is very unfortunte..although things are changing a little

And this is what a diving suit looked like in the early 18th century...

If you look closely at the big photo, you can see that the section that the astronaut is in is new work. You can see a seam just above and just below the astronaut, the material looks new compared to the other sections, which are falling apart.

Just scroll up and down and it's obvious that it's new material

It's not unusual for portions of artwork to be restored in old buildings, they probably added the astronaut as a tribute or something. But just seeing the condition of the surface of the stone, I can tell you that it's not 200 years old.

You're right, there is a seam.

Just 2 objections: 200 years is not old for stone, and ususally when they restore buildings like that, they rebuild them like they were historically up to the smallest detail.

But you may be right.

"Salamanca's cathedral is actually two cathedrals built next to each other, consisting of the New Cathedral "La Nueva" and the Old Cathedral "La Vieja."

The Old Cathedral of the 12th century is a prime example of Romanic architecture.  The "Torre del Gallo" of the cathedral is best seen from the patio Chico, behind the cathedral.  It is one of the most beautiful monuments of the Spanish Romanesque.  Inside the Old Cathedral is the work of artist Nicol?s Florentino, 54 boards with scenes of the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

The New Cathedral is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture.  It was built during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.  It is known for height and spiritual grandeur."

So even though the cathedral was completed in 1766, construction began in the 1500s, so the part that was replaced could have been over 400 ears old, and from that picture, it looks like some of the adjacent sections also had some damage, but weren't restored.

As for replacing the original art, maybe the original was too damaged to see what was supposed to be there, or maybe it was just a rogue artist (my guess, since I'm an artist and I know how they think ). Anyway, the cathedral is insanely detailed, so a small thing like that would be lost. No one would even notice it except maybe some curious shroomerites .

Anybody else know anything about this?

I wonder if it is new work. If it was carved before the 50's or 60's, then something is very strange about it.

LF...they showed that picture on a documentry on history channel the other day, and i believe they said it was done pre 1700's. Don't qoute me on that date though, I was blazed while watching it. But I absolutly recall that picture for sure, and remember them making a specific point that it was done a looong time before the 50's!

This is the kind of evidence that makes it hard for me to believe that life is the way the sceptics say it is.
