innoculating bulk substrate with syringe
    #1511130 - 05/01/03 01:07 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hi, I'm new to cultivation and curious about a place to start. I've read a million teks and am confident in my ability to safely cultivate PCs. I am expecting some syringes in the mail shortly and am wanting to get ready to start

Is it possible to innoculate a bulk substrate (let's say, rye berries) directly from a syringe? Or is it recommended to stick to cakes. My intent is to put together a few casings, and if it were possible to do that using innoculated rye rather than crumbled up cakes, I'd rather do that.

Thanks for your advice!

Rye is not a bulk substrate but yes, you can use a syringe.

Yes, you can inoculate grains with a syringe and make grain spawn in the same way as cakes.

Its possible and in my opinion easier. You might want to look up the Wild Bird Seed tek...very easy tek to follow. You then use your WBS to spawn the bulk substrate such as horse or cow dung. Then you case...voila!

Yes I guess I used the wrong term to describe the grain substrate I had in mind. I read a tek at this url http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/pictures/mmgg05.htm#bulk
that described a way to create rye spawn in bulk quantities, though from a fresh mushroom

So to innoculate a jar of sterilized grain (rye or WBS) is the best method just to treat it like a PF-tek cake and inject into the jar, after pressure cooking and sealing?

This site is a wealth of excellent information, and I hope I'm not asking questions that are answered elsewhere.

Thanks for your help!

That is probably the safest way to start. It's more efficient to do grain transfers or to inoculate from agar, but those techniques require a bit more experience.

Also, if you don't already know, you're going to need some kind of air exchange in your jars, so you'll need to fashion a filter for the lid.  I would recommend tyvek filters or my personal favorite,  polyfil.  Good luck!

ya dude I'm all over the polyfill!
Thanks for the tips everyone! I'll keep track of my work and maybe put it up in the grow logs so it benefits the community
