Firefox help
    #15107836 - 09/20/11 05:22 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I want to import my bookmarks from Internet Explorer onto Firefox.  The problem is that I already have tons of new bookmarks on Firefox, and I'm scared importing them from Internet Explorer will overwrite some of the ones I already have.  I want to import them while keeping my existing bookmarks in firefox (with the exception of duplicates, of course)

Anyone know?

Just give it a try. Worst case scenario, you restore your original bookmarks.

Firefox makes a backup copy for you automatically.

The file name will be (date dependent) "bookmarks-2011-09-19.json"

The location of that file is C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\some weird combo of letters and numbers.default\bookmarkbackups

Thanks, I'll try that

Edit: Thanks, it added all my IE bookmarks into an IE folder.  So It's going to take me like 45 minutes to sort them all, but they're here.

Thanks

There's an even easier way now that I think about it.

Bookmarks

show all bookmarks

import and backup

restore

Then you just pick a day.

i believe exporting them as an html file preserves how you have them sorted..

They were all sorted.  But they were sorted in a separate folder.  There was an IE folder when I opened my bookmarks, and inside that folder were all my IE folders, as well as the ones that hadn't been put into folders.  But there were many duplicates, so I had to see which ones they were, and delete them.  And some folders had some duplicates, and many other non-duplicates, so I had to look through them all, see which one had the bigger folder, and then move the non-duplicates from the smaller folder to the bigger folder.  It was quite a hassle, but it's done.  I was so tired of going to IE every time I wanted to find something.  And it was even more annoying not knowing which bookmarks were in which browser.

For next time:

CheckPlaces 2.6.1 (also scans for duplicates)

or

Bookmark Duplicate Detector 0.7.5
