I can't get it to work with media player, vlc, anything. should be as simple as enabling streaming and entering in url. can't figure out why it won't work

first hit on google..
In VLC, hit File, choose "Open Network Stream," and paste in the main YouTube URL for a video (just the URL and first parameter, like youtube.com/watch?v=GQe3JxJHpxQ).

no I understand that.. I really have to make my posts much more detailed.
what I meant to say was I TRIED THAT with vlc, it didn't work. it should be that simple, enable streaming media, then copy and paste the url where you want to stream it from. but it doesn't work with any youtube videos. I was trying to ask if anyone has had luck with that on youtube or if youtube sucks for streaming.
also, I was really hoping it saves those streamed url's in a shared folder. it probably doesn't. but I really wanted to stream from the internet to media player, since media center uses media player, and I was hoping to stream videos from my computer to another device. media player doesn't seem to have an option to stream from the internet though? is there a way I can download the video to a folder and access that folder from media player? any good links?
sorry I didn't mention I already tried vlc. Thanks though (youtube might block the streaming, idk why they would since it's completely free, still though google paid like a billion to aquire youtube so maybe they want to force people to watch youtube over the internet ) although more likely I just need to change the settings further. in the past, k lite codec download fixed a media player problem. but I heard vlc has all the codecs, unless it works different for linux? I'm using ubuntu. however, when you download k lite, it usually gives a few options on what to decode, should I try redownloading it, then enabling more decoder options?
