Vermeculite, why don't they sell it?
    #1508694 - 04/30/03 06:10 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Been all over wal-mart, several pharmacy's that sell alot of varieties of potting soil, been to home depot, some of the places like Wal mart and Home Depot have perlite, but none have vermeculite, are there any substitutes or any other stores I can try?

BTW, I live about 10 minutes out of Portland, in Oregon, in case it's some sort of wierd state issue or something...

Thanks again, this board is very helpful

Your best bet is to call a small nursey that is locally owned. They will have it. I had my local (small) nursery order me a HUGE bag of verm, so I wont have to fuck around with the small bags.

friend thinks larger verm is better, since mycellium likes airy substrate, she said that if she packs in the larger/medium sorta verm a LITTLE, it colonizes sweetly

True that the larger(more porus) colonizes much faster than the finer more dense stuff.

I use schultz vermiculite...I got it at walmart tho first place I tried....its a lil lighter in colour than most I have seen in pics..but the mycelium seems to be doing great on it...very rhizomorphic

i found my 4 cubic ft bag of coarse vermiculite (18pounds) at a local garden shop for ~$20. the first cakes i produced that fruited were made from fine grain verm/BRF, it took almost a month to colonize. i believe the coarse grain verm is better, it allows more air pockets within the jar to allow the mycellia to grow faster and easier. oh, while you are mixing the substrate (brf/verm) the large parts of the verm breaks up into even medium grain as you stir the mixture. i think that the correct consistency is achieved at this point.
