I'm thinking of going to trade school, and I'd like some personal accounts of what being an electrician is like..

Best trade. You're a part of the job from underground work to finishing touches. Getting shocked sucks tho lol

Unfortunately i'm only helping one, so not getting paid anywhere near union wages... Pulling wire is way easier than framing walls imo

i second this, im considering electrician as a backup. how hard is it to get into the union apprenticeship?, is there steady work? is one particular field (ex: underground wiring) more in demand than another?

It's hard work but if you can still get into and learn a lot it can pay off big time. Just be open to learning how to do it all. My dads an electrician and he eventually learned how to build his own house by himself.
But right now where we're at, things are slow for the small company he use to work for.

Go to school for Instrumentation Technician. I know people that the IBEW just took almost instantly on an Apprentice call with no exp., no letter, and no family in the union.
Or you can just ask the north slope for a bad ass wage. If you don't care about your own sanity that is. My friend flipped out stole a company truck and drove it from Prudhoe Bay to Fairbanks and crashed it into a transformer in front of McDonalds.......Fucking brilliant. No more six figures in less than six months for him.
We make STUPID money up here, but at a price. Depends what trade you are in and if you have a back bone. Oh yeah and if you're native, white, indian, black, or from Alaska or from wherever. Anyways what do you really really want to do everyday for the rest of your life?????
I was an Union Ironworker by trade. I broke my back and went back to school and it was a split decision between Instrumentation and Power Generation. Both of which are in Process Technology(for those who don't know what that is it is flow....like oil or steam or $$$$$$) I wish to hell I went for the FULL degree because right now I fucked my life up by picking the wrong one or just picking the wrong native corparation to work for and now I got two more semesters ahead of me, but two more degrees on top of the two I already have.
That's overkill, but seriously THINK about what you are getting into for the rest of your life because your life can change. Shit happens. Haters HATE. Just be happy and if you really really wanna know what happened with my over 40 an hour cake job operating pressure vessels and turbines pm me.
