So it really depends on the Guru then. There seems to be a lot of gurus saying not to focus on the chakras, and then there is a whole lot of other gurus that say the chakras are the key.
We ARE the chakras...which represent motives. Each individual is a unique combination of stronger or weaker influences from these motives. The motives are universal and invariant, but the degree of influence of each determines our individuality. Then, we need to decide what our model will be for optimal human development. Of course, our free-will is greatly determined by our constitutional givens. Are we primarily lovers, warriors, magicians, or kings (for example). Meditating on my Svadhisthana chakra is not going to make me sexier, more fertile, or more magickal (for example). By the same token, focusing on my brain isn't going to make me smarter or more enlightened. Contemplating my Hridayam will not make me more compassionate. These centers are connected with such motives, but we need to become aware of our motives and do whatever we need to do to find balance. Even compassion without wisdom is unhealthy. It is called co-dependency. There are spiritual disorders, as there are psychological disorders.

Yes I agree the motives is what makes our chakras work, meditating on emptiness alone is not going to forfill these motives I wouldnt think.

but to some degree, you can access your own motives simply through meditating on the physical spot. i find it goes hand and hand with the traditional psychological means. If I meditate on my power chakra i find that has a direct effect on my mood and my intent, and that over time has correlated with an increase in general willpower, which obviously i find my evidence for in less subtle events.

The chakras are nodes or portals in which physical, psychic, and cosmic energies interface. Therefore, they differentiate Pure Consciousness, like a prism does white light. The Qabalistic sephiroth model is another model which can be correlated to the chakras.
