Indoor Subaeruginosa
    #15093643 - 09/17/11 09:20 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Thought I'd start a thread to document the progress of an attempt to fruit subaeruginosa inside.

Have found some info on fruiting subs indoors though no where near as much as cubensis.

Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Am approaching it in two ways.

Number 1.

2 months ago I cased some outdoor subaeruginosa tubs with Pine shavings.
Alder and other popular soft woods aren't readily available, have orded some Alder sawdust on the net but it's not here yet.

Have used the most colonized tub and have scraped off the pine casing which contained mycelium and placed it in a small tray, have covered with cardboard and am keeping it moist.

When fully colonized I'll dunk it in cold water and then refrigerate it, hopefully to shock it into fruiting. Haven't got a spare fridge to keep them at low temperatures yet but am working on it.
Seen a tek with a light bulb, thermostat and in and out air fans, keep them between 6 and 10 degrees c etc....

Number 2.

Set 20 agar dishes, didn't use a glove box, am making one now.
Used myc on cardboard, pieces of stems, strait myc.
This is the best looking one.

Most of the dishes either didn't take or are full of other moulds.

After completing my glove box I plan on transfering wedges of the agar into new dishes.
From there, into sterilized jars and different woods, then into trays, dunk in cold water and into fridge.

I'll update this as it all progresses.

I know of a current grow being done  It can be found HERE

Another current grow found HERE

Here's to hoping for success!

Looks good mate, I think the best thing you can do to start the fruiting process is put them in the fridge during the veneing, then take them out during the day. This should simulate the cold evenings that initiate fruiting... Also any chips will do, you don't need alder etc. Just get some Eucalypt chips from a wood pile somewhere they have been doing street trimmings, just make sure the chips are aged.

:thumbup:I admire your willingness to experiment and attempt new things.:goodluck:
Were the originals collected from Balingup? (former west aussie here)

Dont wanna highjack your thread man but does anyone know if it would be possible to domesticate these outdoor species? I mean could you, through selective breeding and cloning, by way of changing conditions like temps and FAE, slowly but surely come up with a "strain" that would be easier to cultivate in indoor conditions? Or is it just too much to change and/or would take way too many generations? Maybe the shroom god RogerRabbit is lurking and could tell me how possible this is....

Would like to know about domestication, strains etc.....

Originals are from B'up.

Thanks Otto, as soon as the tray is colonized I'll do that.

Have lots of tubs with decomposing mediums that I'll scrape the tops off.

Update.

1st tray is colonising well, am keeping it moist.

The above tray may be a bit large and may take a while to colonize. I have used the pine casing from another tub and filled three small containers.
This size will be more convenient to store.

Ager transfer was reasonable, 11 out of 18 with no glove box just a very bleached small bathroom. Gave 2 to a mate who got the agar.

Various types of unsterilized substrate that are colonizing well, some better than others.
the fastest is the pine shavings and material that has mostly decomposed.
The oldest is 4 months, all have been started from myc on cardboard.

Next - Sterilizing, jars, and agar wedges.

Yeah there were a few little nasties in some of the plates in that pic, consequences of not using a glove box.

I have since made one.

Made some LC's from _OttO_'s tec for beginners, was 72 hours ago, swirled them before taking the pic.

Did some substrate jars up last night and cooked them at 15psi for 1 hour.

Transfered sub myc agar wedges in a draft free sml bathroom that was disinfected, soaked all tools in metho and flamed all tools for each jar.
All transfers were done in the glove box with gloves and plastic rubbish bags for sleeves.
The agar I used was from 4 plates that were 'clean' of any visual contaminants.

This is my first time at making cakes and doing jars, some of the mixes might be considered laughable.:laugh2:

6 jars - rice flour and verm
3 jars - verm, spelt flour, alder sawdust
2 jars - verm, jewton(soft wood), rye flour
2 jars - mix of all the above
2 jars - alder, rye flour, brown rice, verm

Rice flour proved difficult to get locally so I grinded some brown rice in a coffee grinder, it did an ok job though their were still chunks of rice grain visable.
I did the brf jars mostly as practice for one of the LC's which hopefully will be a GT cube LC.

Will be interesting to see if any work at all and if some or all do which will be the fastest to colonize and which if any will fruit.

Will do some strait grain jars this evening.
Am also pondering jars of soaked grain that has not been sterilized.

Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

Most of my substrate mixes were unsucsessful, the myc on agar began to grow quite well in some then stalled, others not much at all.

All is not lost though - http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15161592/fpart/3/vc/1
Thankyou Sporulator

Removed the myc/substrate that did colonize from the jars and put it on egg cartons, soaked them first, kept them moist in an unsealed bag. This method is great and really quick.

Maybe use them for new out door patches.

Made some 'real' jars.
BRF in half pint and Wheat in pint jars.
My LC's definatley look like they have worked in their jars but, 2 weeks after inoculating some brf cakes there was still no growth.
I re-inoculated the jars, still nothing after another week so I binned them.
The LC's continue to thicken, maybe I'm not getting enough myc in the syringe?
I'll give them another go before I turf them.

These are some BRF jars I inoculated from myc scrapped from agar

Wheat jars from myc on agar

When the cakes are fully colonized I'll birth them and see if I can get at least 1 fruit.

The wheat jars are destined for trays when fully colonized.

Made up a number of new grain jars last night.

Rye, Corn, Wheat, Pearl Barley, Birdseed.
Would like to see which grain this strain of the sub myc likes the best.

The trays that are colonizing outside are doing nicely

This is what I'm calling re-growth, I scrapped the pine shaving surface off these 4 weeks ago, growth is rapid as the temps are increasing here.
The layers that were removed are doing vwell in containers in a draw. Going to put them in trays soon, case them and cover.

Unsure what would be an ideal casing, any peat I use seems to get a small fly living in it, they breed quickly too.
Sphagnam moss and verm maybe?

Hey Olive, just wondering if you ever got anywhere with this? I know it's a bit of a bump but as we also know, the myc loves to have the better part of a year to colonise before fruiting and conditions are just getting right outside for those outdoor trays you made.

Hey LowHP............. My indoor attempts at fruiting P.subs indoors kinda fizzled out.

Will be hitting it hard again soon.......

A small fruiting. Victorian strain fruiting off cardboard. :mushroomgrow:
August 2012

Still got the jar in the foreground...... have pulled it outa the fridge after it living there all summer.
Myc has fully colonised the coir....... like ten times over.

The outdoor tays ended up being mixed with the rest of the myc that I bought to SA, which is now in a series of outdoor patches:billymaythumbup:
