6 string Bass

I really don't know much about musical instruments except that I love the sound they make, however I noticed that Phil Lesh plays a bass with 6 strings at times and I think I have even seen him play one with 5 strings in addition to the 4 string. Most if not all other bass players I have ever seen play the traditional 4 string bass. What's up with the 5th and or 6th string and do any other musicians play a bass that has 6 strings?

I think that 6 strings go lower.

I play 5 string bass. The 5th string is lower than the E string, it's a B. My guitarists play in B, and when I played 4 string I always had to tune down, and that made my strings floppy as fuck.. so with a 5 string I don't have to tune down, the bottom string is made to play in B. On six string basses it's the same way, except there is one higher string. I've considered getting a 6 string, but the damn fretboards are like 7 inches wide and a bitch and a half if you play crazy metal, alot on the lower strings, and you don't have alien fingers. (Fortunately, I do)

Hey Rip,
Shroomism pretty much said it all. But I'll cover some oddities here for the hell of it.
The 8 string bass produced by Hagstrom in the 60's. Hendrix played one on All Along The Watchtower.
Then of course the Fender VI, which is actually a baritone guitar. Rick Danko and Jack Bruce both played these in the early parts of their career. A fairly unpopular instrument though, and was not produced very long. They have since been reissued but are still a rare find, especially the vintage ones. Bruce loved the dexterity which the VI allowed him, as did a lot of players from what I understand. George and/or John would sometimes play one of these while Paul was on keys. This is one instrument which I hope to purchase sometime in the future.
Then there are the really extreme basses...12 strings. The late Allen Woody played a Modulus 18 string bass which was originally designed for Tom Peterson A little much for me.

Hey Ripple I remember reading somewere that Lesh invented the first electric six string bass. He had it custom made so he could play an octave higher or lower. Others soon followed suite. Remember those Phil Bombs at shows that shook the whole arena , sounded like the vibration was going to disintegrate us all

Mmmmm, I could be mistaken, but I don't think so. I know that Danelectro and Gibson put out 6 string basses in the late fifties, and then there was the Fender VI in 61 or so.

Nah, Phil didn't start playing a 6 string until the 80's.

Your right ,I went and found the interview in my collection. He designed his six string bass and had a company build it for him. He says it wasn't the first one they made though.

This wouldn't be something that you would be able to post would it, or is it in a mag?

Its an old issue of Dupree's Diamond . It's a Dead magazine kind of like Relix. They went out of publication when Jerry died.

I have a 5 string acoustic. Its HUGE. The extra string is the lower B, be I'm thinking I'd rather have the higher B. Just so the fretboard layout is consistent with the guitar.
6 string is just too much. I saw a p-funk show where this guy had like a 7 or 8 string mutation and p-funk just gave him this like reluctant look. heh it was funny.

Yeah, I've played a handful of 5 stringers (not mine), and they can be a bear to play sometimes. I would think being acoustic that would make it even worse? What kind is it?

Tacoma. Yeah its pry a bit wider than the electrics. I got an acoustic because with electrics I have a habit of raising the volume a tad every 10 minutes until I get complaints.

I think almost every band I've played with has had a habit of turning up their volume. One person starts and its all downhill from there.

I wish I had the money for a Modulous 6. I'd probably go with a Warwick Jack Bruce model though.

Lesh invented or had the first quadrophonic bass.
