Vermiculite is a Carcinogen now...
    #1503698 - 04/29/03 08:30 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

I live in a large city and have been looking for about a week now for verm. All replies to my inquiries result in the statement, "Vermiculite is now illegal to sell in the US since it has been found to have carcinogenic properties." or something to that effect. Since I can not obtain verm without ordering obscene quantities through the mail, and I'm worried about my health, what other alternative is there for mixing with peat/coir to help with water retention and soil aeration(sp?)? I've thought of Perlite but it seems a bit too small and might hold too much water. I've searched through many sites and can not find any help not to mention no word about the verm problem.

I know I do not need verm for a casing but all reports state that it helps extremely well. I'd like to go the casing route to get my feet wet before I experiment with the newly posted "Log Tek" by Roger Rabbit.

Any ideas or tips?

Thanx!!

Perlite makes the water go the wrong way. Peat moss and lime work.

well i don't know what you're talking about...
walmart around here doesn't have it... neither did home depot, and yes i even asked for help locating it...

when i checked at Lowes, there was a spot on the shelf for it but there weren't any bags of it... i got a bunch free from a science teacher though.... they use it to pack chemicals since it holds in water so well. It's very fine, basically like sand but it still works!

i remember the first time i bought a wet eighth it had gold flakes on it... i had no idea what the fuck it was but now i realize it's the verm.

I can't find it anywhere but Lowes where I'm at. And asking doesn't do a damn bit of good, those guys are such morons.. They work in the gardening center and yet they have NO clue about gardening or anything.. Dont' even know the difference between potting soil and fertilizer.. Anyway, Lowes always has it, the Sta-Green brand, used to be Schultz I believe.

Lowes has it here. Walmart only has perlite. Sta-Green is what I get too, Rustik, it seems nice. Some different brands have different "grades" of vermicuite. Some of them have fucking bark pieces and shit in there, I prefer the finest granules possible.

went out looking for perlite the other day. Perlite is usually very easy to come by around my area. The funny thing is I went to 5 different stores looking for perlite, none of them had any but they all had large stocks of vermiculite.

Maybe we could work some out... send me the cash and I'll send you as much vermiculite as you need.

I think it's kind of funny how everything seems to cause cancer these days but as far as I can tell was pretty non-existant a hundred years ago....

From what I heard a verm mine was contaminated with asbestos some where.
It isn't the verm itself that is carcinogenic. There was a bunch of it that had asbestos in with it and it was pulled from some stores. It was gone around here for awhile ,but now Lowes and Wal-Mart have it available. I read this in a magazine awhile back and i'll see if I can find it so I can post it.

If it was really dangerous it wouldn't be available anywere.

If being a carcinogen was enough to make something illegal to sell in the US, most of the shelves in all of the stores would be empty.  I believe that California has the strongest laws and that they only require a warning label.

Go to the yellow pages and call the local greenhouses and you will find some.  The hardware stores and walmarts may not carry it anymore, but any store that supports hydoponic growing will have it.

You can also order it online, which is what I did.  I got four cubic feet of fine vermiculite for $30 after shipping.  Four cubic feet is a lot!  I was thinking it would be around the size of a 5-gallon bucket... it was closer to five or six 5-gallon buckets.
