Oyster conformation Please (Updated)
    #15084752 - 09/15/11 11:13 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat: growing on dead hickory logs in Kentucky

Stem: short off centered

Spore print color: very pale cream maybe a hint of very light grey/violet?

I am almost certain these are oysters, but they seem thinner than most pics I see. I just wanted to be sure. Are there any poisonous ones like these?

Thanks in advance to all!!!

I gotta go check my patches. I finally got some rain yesterday. I'm considering taking a log home to grow in the back yard, and spreading spores through the woods.

Cool! Thanks for the replies. I will wait for a TI to be sure before I eat them. Is there anything that looks like this that is poison?

Angel wings (Pleurocybella porrigens), they're edible but reported to cause some poisonings with people, other than that I've heard all Pleurotus sp. are edible.

I'm skeptical of that Angel Wings poisoning story anyway, a family out in the wilderness eats what they think are oysters and then die.  For all we know that could've be Destroying Angels

Now, that's not to say that there aren't any species that look like that that are poisonous.

Pictures of the gills and stem would allow us to confirm that they are oysters.

Update...I did eat just a few of these last night to see if they were in fact good. They were wonderful! I would rank them close to morels.
I still feel there is something off about them though. They have very thin edges and don't look "just like" other oysters I see in pics. If you enlarge the first pic and then click the "x" on the bottom right corner you will have a very large image. You can see the stems and gills in this one pretty good. I assume they are certainly part of the oyster family, but not sure if I should consume more of them yet??? There are many pounds of them and I hope to collect them and can them for future use. I can post more pics if I need to.
Thanks again to all!
