A well-armed citizenry is the best defence against tyranny.
A nuclear-armed country is the best defence against world domination.
These are both great low-cost methods for world peace and self-defence. Let all the citizens own guns, maybe even make them own guns and train themselves, and then have a nuclear weapons program capable of launching nukes into orbit. You wouldn't need tanks or anything. Just enough super big weapons to kill say, 1 billion people. If every country could do that, nobody would invade anybody and we'd just be organic farmers and butterfly collectors. Perfect. Just TRY and come get us mwahahahahha

the world has been pretty peaceful since countries started arming up with nukes... i don't think there's once been a case of a nuclear-armed nation being invaded. i suppose there's pakistan and india, but they've both got them, and they're not really fighting too rough.

This premise would work, as it did with Russia and the United States during the Cold War, only if both Governments are relatively stable and have some trust of the other.
We knew that if we nuked them, they would nuke us. Deterrence. We knew that they would have a good reason to nuke us if they did. Stability. Neither of these exist with many countries today....

You know, we're lucky the cold war ended when it did. After the race to nukes, it was a race to defend against nukes, and trace nukes, and launch nukes stealthily. See, even though India and Pakistan have nukes, they would have no chance against the US, because US can launch further, faster, and without any notice.
If everyone had nukes, all that would have to happen would be one country that doesn't want to co operate, that managed to get their hands on stealth deliverance technology, and the balance would be broken.
..or even worse, an anti-ballistic missile. I know they have anti ballistics for normal missiles, but I don't know if they neccessarily work on ICBMs.
