Does this Exist?
    #15082682 - 09/15/11 02:32 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

This is a hard one. Touch, hearing, thinking, seeing, smelling are all painful or pleasurable even in the smallest of a degree.

Is there a sensation that is neither pleasurable nor painful?

What are your thoughts?

I think most sensations, apart from physical nerve pain, are neutral or in the least, subjective. We react to them a certain way, with either attachment or aversion, etc.

Like cosmo said, there is a lot that is neutral. When you are sitting in 'silence' you are still hearing multiple frequencies they are just not loud, and although for me silence is neither painful nor pleasurable, there are circumstances where I would be relieved to sit in silence, and where I want to break it. Tasting your own spit is neither either. There are quite a few examples but yes, I think they are subjective too.

it truly is an illusion- your senses are just perceiving the varying vibrations in different ways- its holography; a representation.

Being aware of your own existence brings nice neutrality about, but it isn't really feeling that arises. It's feeling that is always here.

All sensations have no inherent pleasure or pain content to them.

It's their link to the brain's reward & nociception systems that creates the pain/pleasure response if anything.

That creates what we know as "attachment".

Lack of breath is rather painful.

then that would be the sensation of lack of breath, not the sensation of breath.

Breath is the sense of touch/hearing anyway. Although the veracity of that statement is uncertain. Can someone without a sense of touch or hearing discern their breath?

"Can someone without a sense of touch or hearing discern their breath?"

only when you consciously decide to direct your sense of touch or hearing to the sensation of breath can you discern your breath.

so while directing your senses elsewhere you are still breathing, though you are not necessarily aware of breath, because your senses are otherwise occupied momentarily.

in this way breath is neither painful or pleasurable, as you are not consciously aware of it each moment.

breath is fulfilling the need to breathe. Therefor displacing that need which is a pleasure.

Therefore, breath is not the answer. Please people keep discussing this for me. I want to know if there is an answer, it is a very interesting idea to me.

NOCICEPTION (PHYSIOLOGICAL PAIN

EQUILIBRIOCEPTION (THE VESTIBULAR SENSE)
Is the perception of balance or acceleration and is related to cavities containing fluid in the inner ear.

PROPRIOCEPTION (THE KINESTHETIC SENSE)NextPrevious
Is the perception of body awareness and is a sense that people are frequently not aware of, but rely on enormously.

Well, we can fundamentally agree that any nociception is always painful.

That means that pain and pleasure are probably detached from sensation. Why, because if one particular sensation is always painful (pain), then that means other sensations may exist which are not subject to either.

A lack of sensation is not a sensation.
