I access The Shroomery from two.....
    #15082661 - 09/15/11 12:26 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

different computers, one at work (now) and one at home. When Im at work and doing things here and then go home, everything is as it would be in reference to my "threads that have been read".

When I am at home doing things and then come to work, every single thread I participated in at home is "unread" on this computer.

What is going on that is the difference between the two computers?

I hope that wasn't too confusing...

I get that too.  Also happens if I open Shroomery in another browser, and occasionally it even happens if I open a second shroomery tab.  And other times it's fine in both cases.

Should probably ask someone to move this to WAF though.

uhh, do you log in on one computer? if you log in the shroomery should save cookies one way or another for your user account.

if you aren't logged in the computer cookies will read the web site as if you have never visited it before, especially if you HAVE NEVER VISITED IT on the current computer you are on.

if you delete all cookies from cache, one way or another, then go to shroomery, you will be logged out, and every thread will appear fresh. kind of easy to understand this if you look up web site log ins and cookies on google

I thought about WAF, but it's not really an announcement or site feedback

My computer at home is logged off, and I sign in every time I open firefox, my computer at work is always logged in.

that would explain it. every time you sign out the cookies are refreshed until you sign back in. you can always leave feedback, but if you go to web site announcements it will probably be more of a question as in:

"how can I stay logged in even when my pc is off?"

then it will be about them changing the web site

I believe the data used to remember what threads have been read is stored in a cookie rather than in the db.

But why is it that sometimes I don't have a problem switching between browsers or tabs, and other times I do?  Do cookies transfer from one browser to another?  If not, then why does it sometimes work?  And surly cookies should affect new tabs in the same browser.

Nope.  Cookies are shared amongst tabs, but not amongst browsers.  The thread history function has always been super buggy.  I worked on debugging, Anno worked on debugging it, Ythan got pissed and rewrote a large part of it.  It mostly works now... but has a few glitches as you mentioned.

amazing, all you guys work on the shroomery web site? I'd figure shroomery was low budget and only had 1 web developer. web site is some what buggy, but actually not too bad. what it DOES lack is shine and luster, but that is a design choice obviously

and proxys seem to be transparent to shroomery, because all my puppets were fished out. I assume shroomery is hosted on site and not on a random internet domain

this also:

is nice. I can't run a full trace route. unless a server along the way if fire walled off and blocks me but either way I can't run a full trace. nice and secure.

now I don't know what people would hack into the shroomery for, you guys simply advertise for companies and are sponsored. as far as I know, no purchases are made on shroomery, no back end server keeping track of accounts or credit cards or anything like that. but secure is better

I think you misunderstood my question.

Often I have the problem between tabs open in the same browser.  And I don't even have the same browser opened several times.  One firefox tab will have no now posts, and the tab next to it has "new" old posts.

But other times, even different browsers will update each other.  It just depends on the the day.

i think you would need to refresh the tab. Sort of like if i were looking at my threads and a post came in, i wouldnt know until refreshed....ala not 'live' and ever-refreshing

At this point it's actually more of a design constraint than a bug, although the distinction is irrelevant for most users.

Given our current database structure and the way queries are optimized, it's impractical to track every post that every person views.

Instead, we just remember when someone visited a forum (persistent, in our database), and which posts they've viewed since that visit (volatile, in their session).

When someone logs out, or switches computers or browsers, the session is lost, and all posts since their last visit to a forum will appear as new.

The fundamental problem is that the BB is not designed to accommodate persistent, individual post tracking, so it requires hacks like temporary storage in sessions. If I were to redesign it from scratch this would be the first thing I'd address; it would enable other features too. That's kind of a daunting task though.

I'm not retarded. :ifyoucanawe:

That's definitely not it.

@Ythan: Thanks for clearing that up.  It's actually not a problem most of the time.  And when it is, it'll take like 5 minutes to fix it up by looking in all the threads.  The only time it's really a problem is with the funnies thread, and it gives you like 200 new posts.  But that still doesn't take too long.  I remember what I've seen and haven't seen, so it doesn't take too long to get back to my spot.

In fact, I think marking threads as read when they're not is a bigger problem for me.  Usually only happens when my power goes out or something though.  It's not a regular occurrence.

So sit in a chair.

No, the meaning came through clearly.

I'm just not dumb enough to think an old unrefreshed tab should contain new information. :tongue2:

You were trying to help, it's ok.

The problem usually happens to me when I'm browsing the shroomery, someone posts a song, I start it, enjoy it, but want to continue browsing.  So I open a brand new tab in firefox, but it claims I haven't read the stuff I've read.

I've even used Ctrl-F5. To make sure.
