One of the strangest mushrooms I've seen. ID please

Almost sinister looking.  Not in my field guide.    Porous bottoms. (I wasn't able to take a pic of the bottom but you can see under the lip in one of the pictures that it is porous)

Need to see more, but looks a bit like an old man of the woods.  Strobilomyces ??  I don't recall the name!

Definitely Strobilomyces floccopus (Old Man of the Woods)
  -Had I known these were edible I would have picked them.  The forest was covered with them.

Could be Strobilomyces confusus as well (the other old man of the woods) :shrug:

Has anyone tasted it, and is there any medicinal value? Wikipedia says it is best when young, other reports say it is bland and not worth eating.

Tried it once. Fried some fresh, young ones in butter with salt. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that good either. I think they are much better appreciated standing on the forest floor. :wink:

In the Boletes genus.  Worth a try in any case.

Well, it's in the Boletaceae family, but not the genus Boletus. How do you prepare them, cactu?
