That is "rye grass seed" great for forming sclerotia but not so good for spawn/substrate. "rye grain" looks just like wheat, but darker and I buy mine in 50# bags for less that $30.00. If you can't find it locally, it will cost more to ship that to buy. Not making it worth while. If that is the case, Penningtons finch food at walmart works great. It colonizes faster and more complete than rye (in my experience). I use rye mostly for edibles and finch seed for others. Hope this helps a little.

ok so it isn't the a rye seed but a rye grain... That is a start but where should I begin my search for the grain? Walmart or the local feed store? Now I know what I need, now I need a direction.

I get mine at a local health food store. They special order it from Arrowhead Mills in 50# bags. They dont charge extra for shippping since it comes with the regular order. Just specify "organic" since they can get both.
