Windows 8 beta
    #15075221 - 09/13/11 08:44 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

If you live in a cave, you may not have heard that a beta version of Win8 has been released by Microsoft.  Apparently, last time when they only released the Win7 beta to a very few, it was quickly leaked through illegitimate channels (duh, Microsoft), so this time it is a full public beta (wow, genius, Microsoft, welcome to 2002).

Anyway, anyone going to try it?

Nah, I'll pass. I'll get the final version somehow when it comes out.

not particularly, windows vista was late 2006, windows 7 late 2009.... and i believe windows 8 will retail late 2012... roughly 3 year release cycle

It sucks because the OS is getting ridiculously huge.  I may be a creature of habit, but all the stupid visual effects and 3D intensive shit Microsoft crams into Windows doesn't mean shit to me and I've only ever enabled Aero when it's caused tearing in flash video if it's disabled.  The storage space it takes up is fucking ridiculous.  If you have a 120 GiB SSD you have to reformat almost every 6 months with heavy use because of winsxs and updates that are 100's of mb.

How the fuck do they even manage the code?

Why don't you save your data and install programs to a second Hard drive?

Well, the answer would be 'hardly'. And yes, it's true: functionality doesn't sell a new OS anymore, so they have to resort to stuff that looks cool, because that will continue to sell indefinitely. Or so they hope. While in all reality, if you have a normal desktop or laptop, Windows XP still works just fine; no need for Vista, 7 or 8. But hey, if you're locked into a perpetual need to sustain and optimize shareholder value and therefore you need to continue making and increasing your profits, you need to be creative as a company. Microsoft, exactly like the entire Western economy, can only grow and grow until it collapses onto itself.

While making the re-install process a bit easier, it doesn't eliminate the need to re-install.

It's a developer preview, not a beta Im pretty sure.  I actually think its a step in the right direction and have been playing around with it on virtualbox.  I wish I had some kind of tablet or touchscreen to use though

Well I'm not too hip on the difference between beta and DP, but whatever, I think it's a step in the right direction too.  I d'led it, not sure if I'll try it or not though.

The reviews I've been reading about it are pretty brutal.  It sounds like Microsoft is scrambling to compete in the tablet market, without admitting that they are worried about the tablet market, and making huge blunders.  One review I read described it as schizophrenic, switching back and forth between two paradigms, both of which work fine on their own, but neither of which work well together.

I also love Microsoft's BS... "Tiles are the new way to represent programs.  Icons are history."  (paraphrased).  Gee... let me guess, your CEO is a marketing weeny.

This could be a fatal flaw. As they say in my country: too small for a tablecloth, too large for a napkin. A lack of conceptual clarity has killed off many new products.

yeah it's ridiculous. linux is so great, but supports so little users. marketing is the mother fucker of the current world we live in. the things that aren't advertised are ridiculous. who uses microsoft as a public domain in a wan? server 2008 r2 as far as I know it mostly lan type stuff. I believe the public wan is all apache or oracle.

windows has used up it's time, but no one else will invest what microsoft does in marketing, therefore we all eat crap and buy windows again and again because of compatibility. I use it too, I'm not going to lie and talk shit. definitely like linux better. It's not even the command line aspect of linux that bothers me so much. what bothers me about linux is that it's like me and 1 other person in the city that uses it. most people I've spoken to who use linux I've spoken to online, like at the shroomery or what not. but really, 95% of people use windows, 4.5% use macintosh, and like what, 0.05% use linux?

not against mac either......

speaking of tablet, intel is now supporting the android, or trying too. I'm not too impressed with the iphone, but the ipad2 is pretty rocking. I like how the ipad2 uses a combined cpu/gpu chip. maybe the ipad1 did as well, but I didn't realize this until I learned the ipad2 has this feature.

That's interesting, because they are essentially the same device, based on the same hardware architecture and running the same OS and applications.

Why? I mean, SOCs are popular these days, but to the consumer, it doesn't really make much of a difference.

yes that much I understand. I'm not too sure myself of why I feel that way, but one thing is I don't like the ipad screen, it's too compact. it cuts off all the options on the screen, it's painful to me. the ipad 2 isn't perfect to me either, no usb connectors. why do I like the android better? same thing as the iphone? not really, more linuxish, and at least it has a drop down key pad. the new samsung tablet is looking pretty bad ass.

tomatoe tomato? nit picking the difference between trees and trees? well ok. I don't know, I just don't like fancy. xbox 360 fancy is nice because it's simple and works great. so yeah fancy is ok. But smart phone fancy?  meaning it's too simple but can't do half of what your computer can do?? well o.k. that's great for some people but just not my style.

I'm sure many people disagree with me, I know iphones have thousands of apps just like any other computer/operating system does, I'm just not huge on the interface. isn't that why people usually prefer one os/machine over another? the interface? I'm just like everyone else

When thinking about these things, it always occurs to me that the smaller the objective differences between technological products (computers, OS-es, cars), the bigger people's emotions about them. Sort of a balancing act, it seems. While if you get down to it, it really doesn't matter if it's Mac or PC, and if it's Honda or Ford.

My thoughts, exactly.  If I were running MS, I would be focusing on the ultra-thin netbook market.  Make the OS as light weight and energy efficient as possible.  Embrace the new Intel model, reforging the wintel relationship.  They also need to maintain the server market and the office market.

I think the desktop market it nearly dead.  Gamers will move to consoles.  Most other people will move to laptops.  With this in mind, small and light wins... Apple is pushing this; Intel sees this; only Microsoft seems to be missing the boat.

Right, it would make a lot more sense to me if the OS detected what kind of device you were using and present you with a graphical environment suited for it, like KDE's Plasma workspaces.
