Religion and Mental illness.
    #15074756 - 09/13/11 07:23 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Religion seems to me, to be a virus of the mind.

In my opinion it should be illegal for children to go to private religious schools.

I dont think that churches should be able to obtain custody over minors.

I also think that the religious should be treated as "mentally ill" individuals.

They have delusions of grandeur.

They believe in their imaginary friends.

Regardless of whether or not we can prove or disprove religion, judging from human history I believe it's far too dangerous to go unchecked.

We have seen the christian dark age and we here have talked about a possible future muslim dark age.

Whats to stop them from bringing us into another dark age?

They would if it was up to them.

/rant.

Mods if I've broken a rule here feel free to delete this thread, but I didnt see a rule against it.

And before you bring up my first thread understand that I have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and understand why others would think that because sometimes I do.

Oh and I speak from experience.

My guardians signed custody of me over to a church and what followed was a year of brain washing and abuse.

I was one of the lucky ones.

I saw 90% of the kids break and they are not better off.

Homosexuals, drug users, and kids who just argued with their parents, and they were all treated like animals.

I remember reading in one of the popular atheist books that raising a child with religion is equivalent to child abuse.  There is something to it, inculcating kids with magical stories when their minds have no real defense seems cruel and abusive.  But then ideas about parent's freedom and the nature of belief and truth in general seem to complicate the debate.

wow, wut?

holy shit, and i thought being catholic fucked me up. i don't necessarily agree with all of your rant, but then there is this. most messed up dude i ever knew was raised mormon. another was jehovah's witness. can i ask what faith/denomination?

catholics just rape you and say goodbye...

as to raising a child in a religion being abusive.... i wish humanism taught a sunday school of its own. because people don't bother with their kids much these days. cultural indoctrination is a necessity, though the "strength" of it is a consideration. teach kids how to think first, the ethics will follow. (i am not going to get into "kid's are so bad these days" because i don't think they are. but they strike me as more depressed and lost) otherwise, we have tv and bad movies based on my childhood.

I'm not saying that parents shouldnt be able to teach their children about religion.

We couldnt stop it if we tried.

But what if schools taught that religion was a delusional problem?

And those suffering religion could seek medical attention?

I just dont think private religious schools and home schooling are good ideas.

If a private school were to exist it should be required by law to teach evolution.

Schools should be a place of learning.

Not of indoctrination.

Kids should learn to think logically and outside the box and the world would likely better from it.

I was raised catholic and was also taught to think logically and critically and outside of the box. Religion IS outside of the box.

It's not like kids are going to believe everything they are taught for long. It's natural to question and rebel against your parents and their perspectives. Many religious raised kids growup go to university and become atheists for awhile only to convert back later on in life.

i don't think schools should be indoctrinating either (but they do)...but a "by choice" after school or on sunday program where some trusted elder taught the basics of ethical thinking (rather than a rules based ethics, for instance)...that shouldn't be taught in schools, and parents SHOULD be the ones doing it...but they don't.

i have a unitarian church and a humanist society near me. they could and should get on this.

btw...wiki has unitarian listed as a christian denomination. that has been bullshit for forty years. they are totally non-faith...mostly pantheists. i know, i go sometimes. no jesus, no cross, the "pastor" never mentions god, atheists and agnostics are welcome...wiki fail!

Religion gets deep in your blood, its like heavy radiation or a persistent cancer especially if they get you young.  I'm glad my parents didn't push that stuff on me as a kid.  I had exposure to it, I went to Saturday Catholic school for a few years, but even as a 7 year old kid, I called bullshit.  When I got older, I was able to toss it away completely except for a few ayahuasca trips that temporarily breathed life into the cancer again.

Sorry that came out wrong. What I meant to say is that I agree with OP, that children shouldn't be indoctrinated or taught WHAT to think, but rather they should be taught HOW to think - and allow them to interpret the world in their own way.

IMO, religion has its benefits, but it can also be detrimental. I am sure there are some people who know what is up. They are not fulled by excessive practices and yet still partake in religion, because they see how helpful it can be, but they also see how it can be misleading if in the wrong hands. Believing in a god can make one change their life for the better. I think it is like a tool or a crutch used until you have enough inner strength to be on your own. I see nothing wrong with this do your own thing, what ever helps you sleep better at night, do it. As long these beliefs aren't being forced upon and everyone is respectful of each others way of life, without harming anyone, then i think it is ok.

Everyone believes in something, even if you believe in nothing, you still "believe" in nothing. Just as an atheist believes in no god, he is still "believing" in no god.

Everyone is mad, especially normal people. The only time you're not mad is when you've realised all the mind can do is regress upon itself, get buried in itself, and eventually return to nowhere, being the only thing that exists. That's my definition of sanity.

If a war is worth fighting then that shouldnt be a problem.

Blind patriotism is just a tool used to get people to fight for stupid reasons.

Well it's abstract and requires delving into a deeper perspective of reality then just what meets your eyes, such as that of the scientific materialist viewpoint.

Obviously it depends on how you define the box. IMO the whole world can think outside of the box.
