Happiness can ONLY come from within
    #15074352 - 09/13/11 07:50 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

Everything outside the beingness is an illusion. Only by turning the mind inward can anything satisfying be found in this life. The "Now" and any other New Age-ish idea is really just a symptom of an inward mind.

The inward mind experiences what our culture calls ecstasy and happiness, and most of all, completeness.

What is the outward mind but some kind of fear state? What is it looking for? It doesn't even know, but still glances around hopelessly.

Possibly, the whole show is a distraction from looking within, a game of hide and seek. Bright vibrant colours, predators, strange biological niches causing limited abilities... all presenting itself like Fool's Gold and handicaps from looking within.

“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” -Carl Jung

Happiness is subjective. Therefore you are correct.

You mean it's different for everyone? It's only different if you look at it as something to be acquired. Even then, it's same ol' happiness.

I'm not sure looking in is different than looking out as far as happiness goes.  I know people who like certain activities so much that the seem very content with life just the way it is. They feel everything is in place and they are not frantically looking, looking, looking.

And those that search frantically for their soul and relief from worldly pressure?  I see a whole lot of dissatisfaction going on around here also.

As the above poster pointed out,  subjective happiness is open to everyone including you.

The middle path is probably the best. At least for my psychological makeup. I am more prone to look inward and need less time being with people and nature than with myself. I still take the time to call up friends and just relax though, otherwise I start getting depressed.

If you look too much within, you will end up isolating yourself from your environment. At least in western society too much of this isn't healthy IMO. I don't think anyone wants to be lonely for the rest of their lives. If you look outward too much, you will end up isolating yourself from... well... yourself. Self discovery is an important aspect in my life. So at least for me, this also wouldn't be healthy.

I like the OPs post. I think pain is also one those distractions and definately a primary motivator for most things with a nervous system.

I think the illusions are just as important as our selves, as our very individuality is also based on the physical illusion for all that I can tell. My best guess about the grand scheme of things is the universe we experiance is just some thoughts or dreams of reality, our whole universe may even just be one of many many more if not an infinite #. What this means to me is that I'm pretty insignificant in that scheme of things, so I might as well make the best of whatever comes my way while I'm me.

Also I don't know about happy, but if I was suddenly given a million dollars and a couple hot girlfriends, I would definately be siked on it for a while.

I do think outside can influence it, if you're hungry everyday and struggling to get some food I think it will be harder to be happy, but in the end it's all within, plenty of people that have everything but still want more and aren't satisfied, and are unhappy eventough they have everything

I like

When we get something we want the mind stops & experiences inherent happiness, its all the same happiness only mentally attributed to different things
