Image-sprawl of Eastern PA finds
    #15058163 - 09/10/11 01:43 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

First, I saw this large oak that toppled during our recent wind and rain:

...and found these baby hens, along with a few others that I didn't photograph:

I sauteed them in butter, and they were probably the best frondosa I've ever had.

I spotted these A. virosa when driving...elegant toxins.

The rest of these I'll simply post for everyone to see:

This mycelium (or mold?) on the trunk of a freshly overturned oak caught my eye:

Your Amanita virosa are Amanita bisporigera.

Jack might be Tylopilus balouii.

Some of your Amanitas are A. fulva.

I was thinking the Jack might be Gyroporus castaneus - The Chestnut Bolete.  I base this on the stalk which appears to be stuffed at the end then when cut open it should have hollow chambers going down it.  see http://www.mushroomexpert.com/gyroporus_castaneus.html

The greenish mushroom resembles a oviod, I take it that it was a Hygrocybe psittacina or a variant of the sort?

Looking back, I'm also puzzled by the "Jack"--I quickly labeled it when posting the photos en masse, but that's not the Jacks we usually collect.

And, I thought my wife had it in her gear, but apparently we left it in the field; so, I can't look at it more closely or print it now. Hopefully, I'll come across more soon. My guess right now is Gyroporus castaneus because I've found those a few times before in the same area, looking very similar.

Bretdaniel--Which greenish mushroom?
