contam?

in the center of smaller and bottom left of bigger jar there is sumthing that concerns me. It is not that clearly visible so let me describe it a bit. It's dark green mixed with brown color. It looks like freshly crumbled hash... what u think? contam?

Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says "But Doctor... I am Pagliacci."

Green certainly isn't a good sign. I'd say leave it for a couple of days and see what it turns out to be if you aren't sure. But anything other than white (and sometimes liquid yellow which are metabolites) is a bad sign.

damn... so far only 2 jars have that greenish/brownish stuff... so I'm a bit worried that it could spread on the rest of jars. on the other hand if it already showed up in just 2 jars I suppose those spores are in whole incubation chamber. right?

As far as I know, contamination in jars won't jump from one jar to another because (I'm assuming) of the layer of vermiculite, micropore tape, and aluminum foil. Still, I'd separate those two jars away from the clean ones.

What grain is that, and what are you using for a filter?

grain is a mix of popcorn, white & brown rice, vermiculite (1:1:1:0,5 before cooking) filter is cotton wool wrapped in a piece of gauze

Ya that's what I thought. I would recommend a different grain. I use cracked corn, others like rye. If you really like it you could stick to popcorn, but nix the rice. As for the verm, I don't see it hurting anything. I would defiantly get a new GE filter, even postal tyvek would be better than gauze.

ok. thanks for reply. both filter and grain mix are just kinda experiment. i understand what u say 'bout filer but does the grain type has anything to do with risk/possibility of contamination? or is it just a general advice?

Well in a way yes because if it takes longer to colonize with mushroom mycellium, it gives the contam more time to possibly infect it. I just meant in the general sense though. The filter should be your main concern.

Actually in this case colonization is very fast. I made another thread bout this in Cultivation forum: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15058468 so like U said... filter is the main concern... but I'm not gonna change it now, no sense at this point I think... I'll do it with next set of jars...

damn... all jars got that shit in them... that was my last b+ print... because of fast colonization other guys said that genetics in those spores are quite good... u think so too? if so would there be a point in cutting of the contaminated areas in order to obtain at least one flush to get some prints? actually i'm gonna do it anyway, just wanted second opinion...
i'll try to post some pics of that contam later on today, maybe u could help me with identification

Not really... I have always used rice but it usually took bout 4 weeks to fully colonize. This is the first time it was that quick.
