Why wont my video driver install?

system -> hardware -> device manager
video controller and multimedia video controller are lit up. I downloaded the driver for my computer, but it wont install. It does this pop-up thing "installation in progress, this may take a few minutes...". Installation wizard pops up on the task bar for like half a second, then disappears. Then thats it. Nothing. Ive searched for different drivers. Tried a few out...maybe the same driver will work for similar models? Nothing.. So then I installed a more recent version of windows. Same thing.
Im not too computer literate. Is there a way to manually place these files/drivers into the appropriate folder? Maybe another way to install?
btw its a sony vaio pvc-rz50cg

What do you mean by "video controller and multimedia video controller are lit up"? Where did you get the driver from? What OS? Have you tried installing the driver as Admin?

Theyre both highlighted under disk management...uninstalled. OS is xp sp3 june 2011 release (torrent). Havent tried to install as admin. Never had to. I thought if theres only one account on the comp, by default I am admin? I guess not?

Never mind that Admin part, I thought when you said you installed the latest Windows version you installed Win 7, not the latest cracked version of XP.
Have you tried downloading the Video driver from here? http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVRZ50CG#/downloadTab
Is there anything else highlighted in device manager as not having a driver installed?

You can't use drivers from nVidia. Before a driver is installed for something like a laptop their is an .inf file that's checked against your device id, and if it doesn't match it won't install. Just throwing it out there as I have to mod new drivers for my laptop. Shouldn't be as hard for XP though.

Yeah Ive downloaded the drivers from sony. Nothing works.
Other devices not installed: Multimedia audio controller multimedia video controller PCI input device PCI modem video controller video controller (VGA compatible)
I use an external audio interface for my sound, so Im not worried about that, although the driver installs just fine. For some reason its just the video giving me trouble. First windows media player was giving me a message saying I needed an mpeg-2 codec. So I downloaded that. Now it says
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because it is not possible to turn on analog copy protection on the output display. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."

Why not?
OP: depending on the hardware configuration, you'll need to install an appropriate NViadia or ATi driver. This Vaio model has apparently been sold with NVidia FX5xxx series graphics cards and ATi adapters, depending on the configuration. If the NVidia drivers don't work, then try the ATi ones.
You'll have to download some more drivers, but which ones you need, depends on the hardware configuration of the machine. If any accurate documentation was provided with the computer, then that may be a good source. But usually, I rely on visual inspection myself to determine which devices from which manufacturers are installed. Machines such as this one can be a bitch though since they often use proprietary mainboards, which sometimes makes it difficult to locate the right drivers for stuff like audio cards and modems (although the latter are obsolete anyway, so never mind about those).
For playing DVDs, try installing VLC Media Player. It plays just about anything. Performance may be bad though until you manage to install the driver for the graphics card.

They either charge companies(like Dell/Sony) or just don't want the hassle of having to support technical problems because laptops are very specific with how drivers are used for video. It's the responsibility of the oem to provide the drivers and if you try to install one from nVidia it will say you don't have the hardware or something similar. The unique vendor/subsys ID of the hardware in your laptop(for the video) is checked against an .inf in the driver. There is a large online community dedicated to modding these, but it's a bit of a pain because you then are left with an unsigned driver.
nVidia comes out with new drivers all the time and OEM's are slow to get them out and a lot of the time wait for stable releases before putting them on their own sites. It's the biggest pain in the ass and had I known about that I never would've purchased an obscure laptop from a small reseller.
@OP- you can try running DriverSweeper since there may be artifacts left behind from your old drivers. There has been a debate about it now containing OpenCandy but you can simply opt-out of installing it. Uninstall drivers, reboot to safe-mode, run driver sweeper, reboot, install new driver.

This is not a laptop computer. Also, 99% of the big-brand computers (both laptops and desktops) work fine with the chip manufacturer's drivers. I don't recognize the problems you run into, to be honest.

koraks: I read the model wrong in the first post and thought it was a laptop, but it's incredibly common for nVidia/ATI drivers to not install on laptops. Like I said before, it depends on the mfg. and how the laptop is designed since reference drivers may not work as well with their default settings.
www.laptopvideo2go.com and www.notebookreview.com
There are many, many more that have great members that mod drivers for people. It's pretty far from 99% for laptops with dedicated video cards. I should have been more specific, but if you're using AMD/nVidia drivers then you likely have a dedicated gpu. If you look at the forums on laptopvideo2go you'll see the all the brands that reference drivers from nvidia.com don't work with(Pieter's .inf). The .inf they include in a separate download has an incredible amount of laptops added to it.

Ok, I wasn't aware of that. I've been less active in the PC business the past few years than I was before; I guess things have changes. And not for the better, it seems!

you know, I guess I'm late for this thread, but did the op get his video drivers installed?
maybe in the past calling phone support for the company that you bought the hardware/software from was a bad idea, but these days it's not a horrible idea. phone support for some companies has gotten a lot better. when you call hp now they can do a remote access log in and fix certain things in your computer. worst case scenario is you call sony and they direct you to nvidia, you call nvidia and they direct you to sony, etc. etc. etc.
but if you CANNOT get those drivers to install and they are designated by the manufacturer, that sony sold you a laptop with nvidia chip set needing those drivers, then the manufacturer needs to fix that problem for you. it's their fault if the drivers won't install. did op ever explain how he tried installing the drivers? is it through a disk or from the web site? make sure to list that in the future. if you did already and I skipped over it I'm sorry.
