Mushroom flies
    #1505407 - 04/29/03 07:27 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I woke up this morning to find a huge outbreak of shroom flies, litteraly millons of the bastards. I know TMC suggests keeping an air tight room to stop the F**kers getting in but this is pretty impossible, I ended up fumegating the whole room to stop 'em spreading and ruining my whole crop. The compost was well pasturised but the lttle shits must 'ave got in somehow. I did see a couple the other day and killed them but all thier eggs must have hatched.
Does any one have any suggestions to keep them at bay and kill any entering the room?
Sad to lose so many shrooms but i enjoyed killing the bastards

I once had a plague of the fuckers. It sucked. Lasted for months.

Not much you can do but kill as many as you can, clean the fuck out of your grow area, keep killing them, and killing them, and cleaning, and set up fly traps.

First of all you need to find out where they're coming from. Throw away your contaminated compost. Make sure you don't leave any food laying around, (includes fresh fruits such as oranges, pears, peach, etc.) just place them in the fridge. If you have house plants, place them outside. It will take time for you to get rid of them. Good luck.

Summer-time really increases the chance for the little flies...

Somebody once said that if you use a tobacco/water mixture and sprayed them, that would kill them, w/o damaging any casings/cakes.

Them pests are attracted by the odor of his decomposing compost as well as the the smell of growing mycelium. They lay eggs on the mycelium which the eggs hatches and do damage to his mycelium and fruits by feeding on it and or tunneling through the mushroom fruitbody.
Here are some pictures of mushroom flies:

BEEN THERE & DONE THAT :frown:

The scent of bulk substrates with dung, draw the bastards in.

Good pasturization kills the bastards.

Once in, they are there to stay, because they lay eggs in the cased substrates.
The eggs turn to larva, then more gnats, so on & so forth.

Sad to say, best bet is to harvest what you can, trash can everything organic, clean the room out, to the bare walls, fog & disinfect & start over.

Otherwise, it will just go on & on & on.

Plug any way they can get in & Install very good screens (near hepa filter grade) on all air inlets & outlets into the grow area.

Also install an electric bug zapper lamp, in the room. So, if one or a few gets in, odds are they will get zapped.

Example below is of a colonizing tray - covered with polyester filter fabric (EasyGardener brand landscape clothe - not the plastic crap) & a jumbo bug zapper next to it.

I have two holes in the top of my clear lid that goes on top of my shroom kit. Should I cover those up? I'd prefer it if my kit didn't suffer the same fate as my friends, which got completely reemed by those damn flies.

if you get rid of the source they are coming from (mine were from 4th flush casings which eventually contaminated from them i think) then killing all you can see and find everytime that you fan will get rid of them quickly, but one of those sticky screens inside your terrarium will definetely help get rid of them fast, and all y ou have to do is wave it around to pick up all the flying ones.  make sure you blow off the casing by mouth and watch for anything moving, cause they are inside most likely, good luck :smirk:

Wise to have colonizing trays -- isolated from -- fruiting trays. That way, should some gnats appear in the fruiting area, they don't get to the colonizing trays.

Again, once you see them............ you got them.

There is usualy several hundred larva inside your substrates, for each actual gnat you see flying around. So, once they are established as larva, trash can fruiting trays & totaly disinfect & sanitize the area.

There is no other way to resolve the infestation. Other than getting rid of what they infest.
