Dark spots in hardwood pellets?
    #15052288 - 09/09/11 10:49 AM (9 years, 7 months ago)

So I just spawned my first 20 bags of pasteurized fuel pellets with shiitake WBS.  24 hours later the bags have lots of little darker spots that look wetter than than the surroundings but no visible liquid.  Most are surrounding the grains but some seem isolated.  The spawn appeared to be clean and I did G2G with a jar at the same time and they are recovering as expected.  Is this normal or is this a sign of bacteria.  If so I am going to steam pasteurize and use for oysters so I dont want it to go any further if they are going to go bad.  Anyone know?  Evil, RR, Lipa  any other sawdust/pellet growers?

Well things don't always look as they are and things can be misread and mistaken for what they realy are so don't read too much into what I say since I might be mistaken myself. And remember I rarely ever give a definate answer.

I do not have any pictures but in my experience it is normal to a certain
extent for the immediate area around the grain spawn to turn a DARKER
color of brown, enough to visibly notice it, like you have said almost like
the substrate surrounding it is a bit wetter. I would wait a few days and
if those spots get darker or larger I would be concerned.

I am not sure why this happens but it has never given me any problems.

A picture is worth a thousands words, might be a good idea to post one up
so I can better lay your worries to rest if that is the case.

Exactly.  I am just paranoid bc I did so many bags on my first run.  I tried to do hwp in buckets and it was a total failure with shiitake, oysters did fine but you still can't see how things develop in buckets so I have never seen this before.  Wife has the camera and the cell just does not cut it so no pics.

Thanks, I am going out of town tomorow so you have put my mind to rest.  I am sure I will come home to lovely white bags.
