seriously, my dog is in a big city and he has searched all the lawn and garden shops in a 20 mile radius -- no one has straw .. only hay mulch

Feed stores. You may have to go out of the city, but that's where you'll find them. Look in the phone book.

If all else fails you can go to a crafts store, such as michaels. There you will find little mini bales of straw for about $5. It's craft straw, and it's overpriced, but it works.

Its way overpriced, I get huge bails for 2 bucks (I think, its been a while, but it can't be more than 5)

Yeah, but I've used it in a pinch. Feed stores, or just ask a farmer. You can usually get a free bale of straw, nobody cares about one bale of straw, and that can last you a while.

can i order it online?
can i spawn to just manure (or compost mix), or does it have to have straw in it?

One 40 lb. bale should be enough to grow approximately 3-4 pounds of dry shrooms.

FEED STORE.

If not..
If you have any cow fields around your area, look for bales of straw laying around. Ask the farmer if you can buy one.

For small quantities you could try the Timothy Hay cob LM brand. You can find it in pet stores. I think it is used to feed hamsters. It has worked for my friend.

Good luck.

Timothy hay is sketchy IMO.. something about having too much green (alfalfa) in it. I've used it twice and both times got contaminated.

There is a distinct differance between STRAW & HAY. Use your dictionary & look see.

Straw is what you want & WHEAT STRAW is the old soldier. Myc can colonize hampster food, but it is IMHO far more contam prone & far less productive than wheat straw.

yes, but straw helps it colonize much quicker. if you can't find straw at all, a good substitute is raffia grass. you can find it at arts and crafts stores, it's pretty pricey though, but i'm sure you could find it online somewhere for cheaper. Just make sure you get the stuff that isn't dyed or treated.

It took me over a year to find a good steady source of top quality wheat straw, and that's what you want. I've worked with all the craft straws, all the store products, and everything in between. Some of the best substrate ingredients are hard to find in the "big city". A bale of wheat straw will cost you from a couple bucks (right place, right time) to about $15 (outskirts of big city) and it will last you forever. Too bad you have to store it.
The bails don't fit in my truck so I have to have a friend drive nearly 2 hours round trip to get one for me. Then I give most of it away (other big city hobbyists) because I don't have room to store it in my small house.
I work with bulk boxes (small hanging file size) and I probably get 2-3 boxes out of a pound or so. Never actually weighed it up, but I'm making new ones in the next couple of days so I'll see how far a pound goes. I just asked him today if he'd be willing to cut it up and send me smaller amounts by mail. Bad enough I have to drive 45 minutes 1 way to get the horse poop (and I have to scoop it myself) - be nice to get everything delivered.

Aside from feed stores [can't beat 2-3 bucks for all you can carry of *anything*] another place I've seen them is in hardware supply stores; the larger ones. Once I saw one in home depot, and they weren't even selling it. They offered to load it in my truck if I'd get it out of there. It's like alder woodchips, pretty much market-worthless to all but us wierdos. [ "Are you sure you don't want cedar?"]

If you go do a search on ebay for wheat straw, you'll see bales up for $1.50. Most of us can't afford to have something like that shipped to us, but if you happen to be close to this guy's farm.....
I dont' know how to link - maybe someone else can do it for me?
