Stephen Hawking: "the universe doesn't need a god"

I like the part where he's experiencing anti-gravity.

Stephen Hawkings, only famous because of his disease. There are quite a few physicists who run fucking circles around him. He's mickey fucking mouse compared to ed witten.

I dont think so.  He may only be famous to the public because of his disease, but he has done great work regardless.  Ed Witten.... I guess, he has more of a focused research path though.  More on the outskirts of traditional physics than even Hawking.  (Its Hawking, without an s.)

I remember hearing once that String/M Theory is more of a philosophy than an actual theory because it can't be tested.

Thats kind of a pejorative slant.  More optimistic would be that its more mathematics than physics.  Thats not to say that people shouldnt work on it though.  I once went to a talk by Freeman Dyson and the topic went to string theory.  He said that he thinks its good people research it, but maybe we research it too much.  There are ten thousand string theorists in the world, maybe we only need a thousand or so.  But, string theorists are good for small and foreign universities because they are cheap.  They dont need expensive equipment, lab space and research teams to do their work.  So a small physics department can get a lot of bang for their buck with a string theorist (or other theorists as well).

String Theory may indeed end up being the overall explanation we have been looking for, but until it can pass the basic criteria of scientific theories (testable and falsifiable), then I do not consider it a theory. It's a great idea though...just not scientific.

Cool mathematics too.

Um... how does theorizing about the effects of the forces of the Universe prove no "God" was needed?

We can come up with explanations other than "God did it".

String theory is an idea that has no proof. This does not prove that a "god" does not exist. In fact it proves nothing because it is just an idea.

I didnt think he was appealing to string theory when he claims this, is he?
