Help! Gateway desktop problem.

My Gateway GT5028 has recently stopped working. I undid the wiring inside the tower and it still is faulted. I have some documents and a book I am working on that I need to transfer to my older HP so I can store the files or print them out.
Can anyone help me transfer the files? The power is not working for the Gateway tower.

Take out the hard drive and connect it to your HP computer (assuming that's not a laptop model).

You're welcome. Be sure to post back if you run into any problems. There's likely to be some if you have little experience with this, but don't worry; the odds that you'll break anything are very slim.

The Gateway hard drive will be compatible with the HP plugs?
If not, is there any other way to obtain the files?

The Gateway's hdd will be either parallel ATA (40 pin/80 conductor broad plug/cable) or serial ATA (small connector and narrow cable). The HP is bound to have both interfaces. Maybe the easiest solution is to disconnect an optical drive (in the HP) and put the hdd from the Gateway in its place, because then you're likely to have the necessary plugs (power + data) available and the chance of conflicts is smaller.
If both the Gateway's and the HP's hdd's are parallel, the risk of a master/slave conflict exists; you'll notice this by the HP not detecting any hdd's, or it hanging during POST (the first screen with the DOS-style text). In that case, you'll have to work out a working configuration, but let's cross that bridge when (if) we get to it.

Were both of the hdd's detected? You can check this on the POST screen (you know, the one you get when turning the machine on), or in the BIOS configuration menu (press DEL, F1, F2, F10 or any of the other F-keys during POST screen; the key you need to press for the BIOS menu is usually displayed on the lower left or upper left of the POST screen).

Can you turn on your Gateway? You can make sure the power supply works, and get your data onto your laptop, by shorting pin 16 to a ground pin on the 24-pin ATX power cable(simple as using a paperclip).
ATX v2 24-Pin Diagram
There is also a link on the bottom right of the page for older 20-pin.
Anyways, if you use the jumper to get power to the HDD then simply disconnect the SATA cable from the motherboard of the Gateway and connect it to the female SATA header in your laptop. If the laptop can only handle one HDD then carefully remove your 2.5" and put it aside(***Carefully handle after washing your hands and touch the case or PSU of your desktop first to discharge static. Place the HDD on a non-conductive surface.***)
Obviously you'd do the wiring and all of that with the power off and power cords unplugged from outlets... don't forget to remove the laptop battery pack. Google should yield a lot of in depth guides to getting the PSU to power on. If it does power the drive, and you can connect it to your laptop, use a CD to boot into Parted Magic and copy data to a flash drive.
Be careful when you short the two pins!

But the HP isn't a laptop model, is it?

Its probably just not formatted yet. You have to format a hard drive before you can use it.

You might to use a special ribbon cable so you can run the second hard drive as a slave drive.
