Anyone else annoyed by EndNote?
    #15036651 - 09/06/11 06:41 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Anyone else use EndNote? I use it in my (academic) writing, and it's all fun and games as long as you have a document with maybe 25 citations, but I'm currently writing a 100k word document, citing a couple of hundred sources and EndNote is simply not up to the task. Inserting a reference takes 1 to 2 minutes, and invariably ends in Word not responding and EndNote complaining that Word doesn't respond anymore (so I have to click 'Retry' once. Or a dozen times.) My EndNote is up to date, and Thomson-Reuters appears to be either unwilling or unable to resolve this issue, even though it's been brought to their attention by several users. What a complete piece of shit software.

I'm aware of Zotero, which (to the best of my knowledge) works a lot better than EndNote, but I don't feel like converting this monster document to a different reference manager. Although with all the time I've lost due to EndNote fucking up, I might as well have migrated...*sigh* goddamn path dependency.

Just venting....and curious if anyone here recognizes my woes.

I've used it and it's awesome. Well, for small assignments. I have a thesis to write though and haven't studied for a while so I'll need to learn how to use it again and learn how to use it properly. I'm not looking forward to it.

It beats doing it the old way though.

I definitely recommend using Zotero if you're starting a new document and it's going to include more than, say, 25 citations. I mean, I kinda like EndNote for e.g. journal articles as well, but at present, with this 200-page doc I'm working on with >275 references cited, it's a fucking nightmare.

The nice thing about Zotero btw is that you can very easily import literature by installing the Zotero browser plugin, which allows you to directly import publications from Google Scholar. How cool is that? I wish it had been around and I had been aware of it when I started my PhD research.

In my experience it was a catastrophic waste of time.  The version I had was X4 I believe, and I had only ever used it to export citations and manage texts with them.  It was literally just used for a bibliography, typically annotated to help me write the paper.  When I first tried using a template from the publisher's site for 6th ed. APA it was a fucking nightmare.  Granted the biggest problem seemed to be the formatting of the template, what my professor wanted, and the differences between 6th and older revisions of the format... I never used APA before so I thought the template would help me since the format seemed ridiculously tedious with all those fucking names(seriously all science should be standardized for writing).

Whoever makes Endnote should be slapped in the mouth for using a bullshit formatting exclusive to their software, and then taking legal action against freeware companies that try to make use of it (like Cambridgesoft and Chemdraw).  The only reason I used it was because it was free and I'm glad I had more than 30 days with it because I would be very, very pissed if I paid for a license.  As the papers I write get larger and more complex the program just becomes more and more useless.

I've tried a few free programs as well and I find myself thinking about how much better they could all be when I use them.  There's no doubt I may not know much about the software but a lot of people I know just don't/can't use Endnote or other programs to actually write with.

So I'm not alone....yes, I recognize everything you say. Formatting is a bitch, although I must admit that there are libraries of formatting styles available online for EndNote, and they can be adjusted to some extent. It takes a lot of time and tinkering though.

In essence, the concept of EndNote is pretty nice: it's highly customizable in terms of output and it integrates with MS Office. Sadly, the implementation completely thwarts any merits the software could possibly have. Also, the utter lack of responsiveness of Thomson Reuters to the stability and performance issues with the software annoys the crap out of me.

Btw, have you tried Zotero? After inquiring with colleagues and doing some desk research, it keeps coming out as the 'best of the worst'. The fact that it offers more functionality, apparently with better performance and at no cost makes it vastly superior to EndNote in my perception.

Does nobody use LaTeX anymore?  BiblioTeX, in the day, was awesome... though I am a bit dated.

I downloaded/installed Zotero because of a nightmare.  For some reason my Endnote started and said my trial period expired(site license may have expired idk) which was preventing me from exporting bibliographies or something... it was a while ago and I needed the shit in Zotero but just could not get it from Endnote to Zotero.

It seemed like a cool idea to me, but I was in a hurry when I used it an never went back to it.  They may have been the ones sued by Thomson-Reuters for being able to import Endnote files.  After the Endnote SNAFU I moved away from that shit and listened to my advisor.

Not me, personally, but a lot of the people here use it because of its superior abilities to deal with formulas and shit. I don't need that though, and the bad interoperability with MS Office always annoys the fuck out of me. I mean, we work a lot with track changes, and that doesn't work well with the LateX way of working. Btw, I do like the paradigm of LateX: separating content from presentation. I have no experience working with BibTex btw, but I'm sure it's still a good solution. I think it's the de facto standard for hauling around bibliographies.

Zotero was sued by TR because of Zotero's approach to importing formatting styles from EndNote, I believe. Something like that.

I use Papers2.  I'm happy with it.
