When defrags get stuck, it usually means there is a disk error. Run scandisk first, then defrag. If you drive is really fragged then your better off starting it before bedtime as they can take a while!

Try using a 3rd party defrag after running a scandisk. Try norton, as the defrag w/ windows is basic and doesn't work great.

thanks for the quick responces guys. i tried scandisk and after it tried a few times it said "scandisk restarted 10 times because windows or another program has been writing to this drive. quiting some programs may enable scandisk to finish sooner. do you wamt to keep receiving this message?" when ever i did scan disk before it did it pretty quick. i dont really even know how to stop running programs. i got rid of the little sign things by the time in the bottom right corner. is that what it was talking about? thanks again.

Make sure NOTHING is running. If you're on dial-up, stay offline. Exit out of every program, i.e. internet explorer, aim, kazaa, mirc, any firewalls. Just leave the computer alone while scandisk is running. Don't run any other diagnostic programs at the same time either.

I bet you that 'findfast.exe' is runnign in the background. You need to kill that process.

I bring up my computer in safe mode, run scan disk and then run defrag. Safe mode assures that programs aren't running in the background and that the computer is not using virtual memory.

When running scandisk to check for a bad disk, be sure to enable surface scanning, or whatever they are calling it these days.

What Evolving said. Always run defrag in safe mode.

I had the same problem. I know enough about computers to be dangerous. Set up local networks, Internet, yadda yadda. I didn't know that running defrag in Safe mode was an option. You helped my problem with your question, thanks.

When you run defrag MAKE SURE that you have disabled your screen saver or it will never finish...in my experience that is the problem 99% of the time.

like one of the above posters said, run it in safe mode

or try

leaving it on over night. but make sure u ran a thorough scandisk first otherwise when u wake up u will be dissapointed.

in windows xp..well the defrag kicks ass. takes less then 15 mins to defrag my 75% used 30gb HDD. It also helps if u are using the NTFS file system, it's just a better choice IMO and i've tried everythign from the original windows back in the day to the alpha versions of the upcomming to linux and for all sorts of reasons.

That would most likely work, but usually you don't have to go that far.Just make sure your screen saver is turned off ,then hit Ctrl Alt Del at the same time. This brings up a menu that shows everything that is running (even stuff you don't normally know about).Click on anything that isn't "Systray" or "Explorer" and go to END TASK and click.Keep doing this until all you see is "Systray" and "Explorer".Now run defrag again,it should work now.

Can any one answer me these questions? I am a computer retard.

1. How do I run in safemode?
2. How do I run a scandisk?
3. How do I defrag?

My computer is running a lot slower than it used to. Perhaps doing this will help.

My operating system is XP. Thank you for any info.

Peace

umm before windows stars.. u will see that black screen with a bunch of data.. tells u what ur running and everythign.. I think you hit F1 to entering into this menu and u can go to safemode from there.. im sure someone can explain it more thourogly.. but if you kinda understand computers and have any clue what i just said then u should have no trouble finding it.

scan disk and defrag are both programs under start>programs>accessories>system tools.. at least in my version of windows.. If its not u can always do a search for scandisk and disk defragmenter

To boot in safe mode, tap the F8 key every second or so while the machine is booting up.

Also, yuo can use msconfig to disable any programs than may be eating memory. Just click start, then 'run'and type msconfig. Click the 'startup' tab on the end and uncheck any programs you don't want to load. Remeber you can still use any of the those programs, they just won't be loaded at boot.

You can also clean those suckers out of the registry and bypass msconfig. If you're interested in this, let me know and i'll tell you which keys to deal with.

you may have a trojan running in the background that youd know nothing about...that could cause scandisk to restart, also if you had NT5+ youd be running NTFS, which is SELF DEFRAGGING!

I agree with using norton defrag I've found it too be MUCH more reliable than the built in defrager...and faster too
