Turn a retired Incubator into a Hermit Crab House!
    #1502271 - 04/28/03 08:52 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

My sister had some hermit crabs that were neglected... and nearing death.
I took pity on them, did some research on the net, and discovered that growing hermit crabs is just as easy as growing shrooms! They grow in similiar environments, coincidentially.

So what I did was took a retired 6-gallon incubator, set the dial to 80F (Hermit crabs live in 70-80F), and filled the upper tub with some calcium carbonate + blue sand.
Then I took a cup of spring water (Hermit Crabs can't stand chlorine) and filled up a small dish.
Hermit Crabs live in 50-80% Rel. Humidity. Good thing I still had my retired air-pump and air-stones. This provided adequate humidity when bubbling in a cup of spring water.

PICS AT BOTTOM!

Well... I only had to buy two things... that was a reptile tray so the crabs could drink w/o drowning themselves (which is full of blue sand right now, they are messy fellas) and some hermit crab food.

They are omnivores, so they eat basically anything, not to mention they are also scavengers. They don't like watermelon though!

The setup concept is very simple: Here is a crude drawing I made in PAINT:

Note: You can also get some T-Rex Stone (pet stores) which is basically CaCO3 and some sand. This is what I got, but it's somewhat costly. However, its edible, so that satisfies the crab's calcium requirements. You can also use sand and CaCO3, but you'll have to measure it out.

Hermit crabs can live up to 20 years in the wild. Maybe I'll have these guys for the next decade or two! hehe.

I'll take pics later (probably tonite or tomorrow).

Anyways, I went to the mall the other day... some guy was selling hermit crabs at $15 a crab and $7 for half a coconut with a hole drilled in it serving as a small cave.

So I went to the market and bought a coconut... cracked it in half, and now I am currently transforming it into a small cave. Let you guys know later.

Also, I am adding some dried Cholla Cactus so the crabs can climb around. More pics to come, stay tuned...

Wanna have some fun? Grab one of the crabs antenna, you can now walk it right out of it`s shell.

One time I caught hermit crabs on vacation but didn't know you had to feed them or give them water (I was young). Then one day I picked up the shell and the white dried up dead crab just fell right out. :frown:

I'm jelous of your aquarium. That's cool. The only pet of my own that I have to take care of is my bean plant I smuggled from our science room... Been growing for 3 days but no sprouts yet! Can't wait to have my own been plants. 40 seeds + 1 tiny pot = a fuckload of plants.

I also want siamese fighting fish, and a frog.

With the addition of the Cholla cactus... it's getting a bit cramped.
I might have to move them to a bigger tub, another one of my old incubators...

More pics to come.

Moved them into a bigger, old terrarium/incubator... this one's got a few holes in it!

Finishing up this coconut half... gonna drill a big hole in it and make that into a cave dwelling like the artifical rock you see...

Keep y'all updated!

Re: Hermit Crabs: DISASTER STRIKES! [Re: daba]
    #1630228 - 06/12/03 11:08 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hey enthusiasts:

Horrible news.

Let me take it from the beginning.
Everyday, I check on the hermit crabs, and one day I found the white one pulled out of its shell crawling around near death. I figured it was sick or something so I placed it in another tub, and into a new shell. I thought it had died so I was planning on getting rid of it later that night.

Much to my surprise, it was still alive, so I put it back into the original house.

Now here is where chaos struck. Apparently, football and the white shell had some sort of dispute, because later that night, I came back to see football pulled out of its shell, abdomen dried up, every limb torn off, and decapitated. I think it's white shell's doing. Football's 50 or so remains still are sitting in the hermit crab terrarium, as its way too grotesque, I'll take pictures later, and clean up maybe tomorrow.

I never knew hermit crabs could be so violent. I mean, football was really, really torn up. His entrails were not even recognizable, as they were all crunched and dried, including his head and limbs, claws, etc. Only thing intact was the abdomen, which was dried up anyway.

Yikes, this is really unnerving. Gives me second thoughts about the serenity of these crabs.

Here is a strange twist.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while... this is what REALLY happened.

So as you all know I had three crabs to begin with... white crab, blue crab, and football crab. So, it is true that white was pulled out of its shell, so I placed it in another beige shell, which it took as its new home.

Well, white crab did get utterly annihilated by football, but instead of simply mauling white crab to bits, football took white crab's new shell!

A few days later, blue crab took football's shell.

Weird, isn't it?

Anyways, I added some coir to the mix. Coir sucks, dries up too fast! I also moved them to a much bigger terrarium. They love to dig holes, so the depth the coir added is a true bonus.

I'll post some pictures later...

They aren't even cheap in wisconsin. They're like $7 for a pretty small one. They all die within a few weeks while in proper condition, i think they must get beat up pretty bad being shipped here.  :smirk:

Providing extra shells eliminates competition for shells. I currently have two different sizes of hermit crabs so they will never need to compete for shells.
I got the same shell recently, of the black and white one you have. It looks amazing, and I can't wait for it to change into this new shell.
I commend you, you have a wonderful crabitat... filled with plenty of choya wood!
Have any of the crabs pinched you before? My girlfreind got pinched by one, luckily she was already on oxys

A similar thing happened to me. I came home to find a shell, and littered all around it were hermit crab parts... I felt really bad about it, and was about to throw it away... but by chance I actually looked inside the shell and there is was. I was confused for awhile before I realized that it had molted. Oh, and hermit crabs will last longer then just a few weeks if you take car of them right.

Actually hermit crabs live a life of honor, Japanese style. Many crabs will sooner allow their limbs to be torn off then succumbing.
