Ok i will say that if you go to lowes, a sure fire way to get a pedro is to read the label and if it says Candle cactus, YOU got ONe.. underneath the name it will say pachanoi  .  OFten most mistake Blue myrtle for pedro's.. I have nearly bought a blue myrtle b4, they look just alike.. Anyone know the tag name of the Trich peruvianus from the stores?? jojoba

need a closer pic, specially near the node and the area above it, including a good view of the spines.

nero, we're not trying to identify the cacti that Bob posted, we are looking for someone to give us descriptions of what to look for when trying to identify San Pedro and Peruvian Torch on our own. Thanks.

I checked my local Lowe's today and all they had were very small seedlings, but another nursery had what looked like decently large Pedros.

no trichs that I could see, I was a little disapointed in their selection, they had about 40 "moon cactus" seedlings. I might check out the other two that are somewhat close to me though

san pedro and peruvian torch both contain varying amounts of mescaline.  some specimens rival even peyote in alkaloid content.  do a search

tasty:

T. pachanoi:
...Contains: mescaline (0.11 - 2.3%), 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenethylamine, 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine, anhalonidine, anhalinine, hordenine, tyramine, 3-methoxytyramine.

T. peruvianus:
...Contains: mescaline (0.82%), 2-chloromescaline (.02%), tyramine (.009%), 3-methoxytyramine (.01%), 3-4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3-5-dimethoxyphenethylamine (.004%).

note: these are the results of single assays, and alkaloid concentrations [or even presence with some] will/may not be consistent from one specimen to another.

one good identification feature of a trichocereus is the V shaped notches on the ribs above each of the aereole.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I too am pretty curious, I think it was jojoba who originally asked, about what they put on the tags of Trich peruvianus at stores like home depot, walmart, and lowes. Anyone got a clue? Someone must know.

Peace and Much Love.

peruvian torches [T. peruvianus] are usualy labled as just that when i have found them.

i have found san pedro [T. pachanoi] labled by it's binomial before but it's usualy not labled at all.
